If you work at Canary Wharf where would be the best place to live with dcs?

My db and his fiance are wanting to leave London before they have kids, with the expectation that they will have them in the future. DB has just got a job at CW, so where is commutable and a good place to have a family - please? It needs to be North of London because of his fiance's job.

Sorry ought to have added that have friends, who have decided to stay in CW, considered Cheshunt & Epping Forest presumably because they have ok rail/tube links, but were more inclined toward south of the river.

Epping is a possibility (our nan lives there), but knowing my db he's probably looking for somewhere a bit more chi chi . If it were me I'd plump for Blackheath or Greenwich, but that obv wouldn't meet the being North criteria.

yes, my friends looked at a number of houses in Blackheath which was their preferred area but in the end opted for living 5mins from work in soulless CW

Hampstead/Hampstead Heath involves only one change but no idea practically how long the journey would be - or do they want further out of town?

They're currently in Hampstead, renting a bargainously cheap flat - however I think to buy a family home there would be impossible (db is just starting a grad job at 29 - he's a very mature student )

Hampstead as already said - on the jubilee line or somewhere on the Northern line (like Highgate) and change at Bank for the DLR. TBH I work in Canary Wharf and a lot live in Essex or somewhere commutable from London Bridge or Waterloo, neither of which fit the north London criteria.

So outside London and north, commuting into Liverpool Street (a short walk from Bank for the DLR) would be good. Trains into Liverpool Street come from quite a widespread area and it depends on what they are prepared to accept travel time wise. But Hertford is nice as is Bishops Stortford. It really depends what their budget is - I'd say a modest family home in those areas would be £400k ish.

I hadn't thought of BS - thanks. I've suggested St. Albans (pooh pooed - despite it having been good enough for me and my dh ), and Harpenden.

How bizarre - I think St Albans is lovely!! Maybe they said no because of the commute - I commute into Kings Cross and getting the Northern Line down to Bank then changing to DLR is a pain.

Bushey, Cheshunt, South Oxney...

They might consider looking at some of the less expensive parts of London - Kentish Town, Belsize Park, Holloway...

I'd probably consider something on the Northan Line, like Archway, or Highgate, Finchley Central so that the northen line train can be caught straight to London Bridge, Change to Jubilee and get to Canary Wharf for work. Alot of places are far lovlier but its the changing lines and things which can be annoying at rush hour. Ofcourse you need to consider which part of North London his fiance's job is in and how she would commute. It's quite normal to do an hour and 15 minute commute each way to work and back.

If you compare Belsize Park to Belgravia, then yes, it is one of the cheaper parts of London.

depends how much of a commute you want - if you want to be in "London" and northwards then you could think about what kind of house you fancy...Tufnell Park etc up the Northern line mainly terraced, get a bit more space if you go out a bit further as houses are 1930s semis.
we have one of these and I love it - about twice as much house/garden for the money as we would have got further in, lots of parks etc and as we are quite near a tube station, commute is OK.
If you are OK with a train commute, and want somewhere "nice" winchmore hill?

Hertford is very popular with the city crowd (lots of our friends live there) or in London Stoke Newington is lovely but there isn't a tube station.
