Dull, but, colour advice for stair carpet please! Oh, and what's the best fiber mix?

We could do with a new stair and landing carpet, I never particularly liked the sisal one that was here when we moved in and now it's really tatty and pretty badly stained.

I'll go up against hard flooring in the hall and bedrooms so it needs to work with that. It's the NOTELAAR here but the true colour is a bit warmer. Oh, and the walls and woodwork are white.

I definitely want a plain carpet and it needs to be dark-ish, or at least not pale IYSWIM.

Any ideas? I never have a problem with wall colours but this has got me stumped...

We have off-white walls and a mid-shade wood floor, and last month had a new carpet whose colour is best described as milk chocolate. The colours work very well together and it will hide the dirt from two DCs and husband who forgets to take his shoes off!

Not sure about fibre mix but it has a nice rib to give it texture.

Thanks Pedulum.

I did think of brown but I think it might be a bit harsh against pure white...

I would go for something 'mottled' that has a speckle in it, ina light beigey neutral colour. if you go too dark you will be picking bits of lint off it all day. if you go too light...well it will just get wrecked.

I know you say your sisal is not good but we have tough coir up our stairs and landing and it is the best thing I've ever had in my house.

What about a warm ginger coloured one with a warm saffron coloured fleck?

ProfRichardDawkins · 21/01/2009 15:10

Oh and I would opt for a 50oz 80:20 woolther fibres carpet. Or 40oz at a push. Anything of inferior quality will not last and stay looking good.

woolther fibres

Mmm, I'll bear the speckled/mottled thing in mind. I can see it being quite forgiving. I know what you mean about going to dark, though maidamess, PIL have a stunning black stair carpet but despite the house always being spotless the stairs almost always look filthy!

The two main problems with the carpet we have is that it is shockingly badly fitted so it's falling off and fraying all over the place. Also it stains if water is split on it, which seems to happen a lot here I think it's about six years old but you'd think it was closer to 20! It's put me off sisal etc for life I fear...

Makes a note: 50oz 80:20 wool/other fibers (40oz at a push). Thanks Prof does it matter which other fibers?
