Has anyone ever refurbished a cot?

The house next door to us used to be a nursery, up until 2 or 3 months ago and it closed down.

The landlady of the house is now doing the house up to rent privately and knowing i have kids she asked me if i knew anyone who needed a cot - so i said i'd take one and ask around.

The thing is this cot looks like it has been painted white because its peeling off now so obviously not in any condition to give away.

I'm thinking of sanding all the paint off so its natural again but have no idea what to do with it after that, shall i varnish it, leave it as it is, perhaps paint it? if i paint it what kind of paint do i have? Gloss?

I think i might make it a summer project to do and if it works out ok then i'll see then if the local charity shop will take it off my hands.

We tried paint stripper first but it didn't really work very well, so we sent the cot to be dipped in paint stripper at a place that does doors etc.
Then we treated the wood with something nourishing , i don't remember what.
then used varnish safe for kids furniture.
Came up lovely.
