my dd 5 and ds2 share a room, at present, one half is all pink and fairylike and the other is jungle themed, with a curtain divide.Have decided that room is too small for this and need to be more practical.I think we will have to have bunkbeds as you cant fit 2 single beds in room.I need inspiration for creating a room that they can play in together, but that looks nice, any ideas for decorating themes, space saving solutions etc would be great.does any one else have boys and girls sharing?

What about a woodland garden? You can paint a tree going up a wall and onto the ceiling and then stick fairy lights to the branches. Green carpet, blue ceiling, animals painted here and there.

Verbaudet have some amazing kids storage and themed sticker arounds things like that, cheap MDF but can be replaced every couple of years at those prices.

Could you fit in two single beds if they were up on platforms, so they'd have all the floorspace to play in?

This sort of thing.

Or one of these?

thanks for ideas, woodland theme sounds good, will look into that.wouldnt be able to fit 2 singles in room unless cut off a corner which would be a waste, really want some floor space, just enough for them to play a little. has anyone seen any good shelving units and toy boxes?

I would paint the walls white and head to Ikea for some storage

Or get someone to make floor to ceiling wall shelves in mdf that you can paint. Ikea do plastic crates on castors that could go on the floor under the bottom shelf for heavy toys like cars/lego.

I presume the 5 year old will have the top bunk. Ikea do a sort of tent thing that goes over the top bunk or you could make some sort of canopy out of voile and let your daughter decorate it. The bottom bunk could be curtained off to provide the 2 year old with his own den. Maybe an underwater theme as it will be darker and your daughters bed could have an above water seaside/beach/mermaid theme.

If you like this seaside theme you could extend it to the rest of the room with bunting, fishing nets, use buckets to store small toys maybe get some inflatable rings/toys to hang from the ceiling.

You need Children's Spaces by Judith Wilson. And her other books - Family Living, Teen Zone.

My dds both currently share a bedroom with bunk beds and on the wall opposite we use

this shelving unit

from IKEA to keep their books and toys in. It is very easy to see the things they've got using this open shelving system. And the good thing is, the spaces are deep enough to house larger stuff like games in boxes.

I would go for white beds, white furniture and white walls and then very bright colours in stripes or spots.

Agree that IKEA is great for this kind of thing. They also do good white underbed storage boxes that you could get loads of toys in.

Something like the stripey duvets on this page - with different colours for each. The curtains and rugs are quite nice too and not too "themed".

thanks for all your ideas. unfortunately ikea is miles away from us and no car, will see how much they charge for delivery, those shelves look great. also love the seaside theme.

DD aged 5 and DS aged 3 share a bedroom and we've just decorated it in a seaside theme and it looks really bright and cheerful. We've got sandy coloured walls and striped deckchair curtains. Still need to make some bunting yet. Laura Ashley do some nice seaside bedding.www.lauraashley.com/bin/venda?ex=co_wizr-xapian&bsref=lauraashley&searchfld=&searchpage=0&searchinvt =1&searchstry=0&searchicat=0&searchlike=1&itemsperpage=8&threshold=20&searchex=seaside
