ideas for holdbacks for curtains needed please

Anyone got any ideas on what I can use for holdbacks. Redecorating our bedroom in a french/shabby look, can't find the right holdbacks. Could I use door knobs as I like those cracked porcelain looking ones but not sure if they would work to hold curtains back when they are open. Failing that I could get some tassle type ones which I think would suit the room but would prefer holdbacks as they are easier to use. Any ideas please?

The end of a bannister?

Put the door knobs on wooden blocks?

A finial?

Thanks Katy! Finial is a great idea

I bought a couple of metres of thick hessian style rope - about 3 cm in diam . from B & Q and just looped it round the curtains - nothing affixed to wall.
Looked great. Dead cheap!
