John lewis

homebase

Now, i'm not saying I particularly like this, but how does this price difference happen? Neither are in the sale.

See, I keep saying John Lewis is a rip off and the collective power of MN won't have it. I knew I was right!!!

morningpaper · 20/11/2008 20:23

hehe that's funny

georgimama · 20/11/2008 20:23

and how seventies is that shade - my parents had those in every room!!!

PeaMcLean · 20/11/2008 20:25

I'm quite stunned at the JL mark up tbh.

Tis slightly different though - the centre of the flower is a different shape. I expect the JL one is much better quality, v expensive though all the same.

UnfortunatelyMe · 20/11/2008 20:28

Because people like to say..."Oh yes, I got it from John Lewis"

and have enough money to be paying £120 for a lightshade in the first place.

It goes with..."oh yes, I have Farrow and Ball Cornsilk Blue in my hall.."

They pay £15 a pot more than homebases paint so they can trot out that little line for the next 4 years.

Anna8888 · 20/11/2008 20:29

John Lewis is awfully dull for the price.

AuraofDora · 20/11/2008 20:30

the last time i pointed out a 'never knowingly undersold' to john lewis the electrical dept collectively put their fingers in their ears and went la la la...then mouthed 'feck off' to us..

well spotted!

ruddynorah · 20/11/2008 20:30

it's not the same light.

m&s do a version too, at £70ish

georgimama · 20/11/2008 20:32

Do you think so, UM, because that is deeply pathetic if so.

I am terribly proud of how cheap things are, epecially when my ebay antique leather sofa is mistaken for sofa workshop/laura ashley and people think my B&Q wallpaper is Osborne & Little or similar.

georgimama · 20/11/2008 20:34

I think it is the same one actually, the JL photo is just better shot (no doubt partly accounts for price difference).... same name and same size.

Will probably get this

though I do like this

Which is very similar to

this

OP posts:
morningpaper · 20/11/2008 20:42

don't get that peaches - lampshades with a metallic interior look SHIT, they don't filter the light nicely AT ALL, it looks like a bus station

you need an opaque shaded which lets light through

PeaMcLean · 20/11/2008 20:51

"looks like a bus station"

I didn't know that, fair comment.

Though it's for the main ceiling light in the front room and we never have it switched on, we only use the lamps, so might be ok???

What I really want is one of the massive red ones they have in M&S (ie the shop fittings not on sale) but I can't find those.

OP posts:
morningpaper · 20/11/2008 20:53

oh yes I know the ones you mean - they ARE nice. Have you tried Next?

PeaMcLean · 20/11/2008 20:54

PeaMcLean · 20/11/2008 20:58

Nah. nothing quite so big.

Wonder where they get them. I often prefer shop fittings to the stuff they sell.

OP posts:
morningpaper · 20/11/2008 21:00

yes me too - their christmas shop fittings are always gorge

samsonara · 20/11/2008 21:26

Looking at it in more detail, ,the John Lewis one is made of cream Capiz shell (by product of oyster industry), and the homebase is probably a yellower imitation. A bit like having a czech crystal chandelier and comparing to an identical looking glass one., you can't see itstraight away but once lit up the real one has a shimmer to it and the artificial one is like a plastic gloss.

PeaMcLean · 20/11/2008 21:43

Well, that's quite interesting, and I guess if the shade was going to be particularly prominent it might be worth an extra £80 for that but I really don't spend that much time looking at my lights

OP posts:
Jampot · 20/11/2008 23:55

john lewis will never be undersold -

NotanOtter · 21/11/2008 00:02

they WILL be different
