Woohoo, bad house finally coming together, and would you put a rug in your kitchen? And how do you get wee-stink out of wood panelling?

Moved to hellish downsized house last month as couldn't afford our beautiful one. It is small, it stank of wee , tomcat urine and neglect, it is/was freezing, and beyond filthy. Today I started the worst job of all-painting the (brown) artex ceilings, and oh I am in heaven! It is finally starting (ish) to look like a home! It has been rented to students since the seventies, and boy can you tell, but I am so happy I just had to tell someone! It is turning into our home!!! .

The kitchen floor however is v v v grim and vvvv cold on the poor old feet-what kind of rug would you put in it? It is a small galley kitchen.

Also a large proportion of the downstairs is wood panelled, a la swiss sauna but stained orange, and I can't rip it off as we are renting-how do I make it look better/get the horrid horrid smell out?

Re: kitchen rug - how about a cotton one ie then it can go in the washing machine when needed. Make sure you get some rug gripper as you don't want to be skidding around on a rug in the kitchen. Not too sure about the wood panelling though - perhaps sand it down and repaint perhaps white to freshen up?

Great it is turning into your home, that's a good feeling

Congratulations!
I'd second what pc said - a washable rug with a rubber under thingy. We have one from b and q.
Alos, the pannelling can be sanded, undercoated adn painted with eggshell in a nice off-white. You can get water based eggshell. We did this in our hallway and it looks nice and takes a tanking from ds.
