Should I put a double shower or a bath in my bathroom?

I have a decent size en suite on my master bedroom. It has a large double ended bath in it and a shower with a screen.

Across the landing we have a 1970s avacodo suite in our bathroom. We are thinking of getting it re-fitted in the next year or so. As we have a large bath in the en suite we thought of putting a double shower in the bathroom instead.

Would that put potential buyers off in the future?

sShould clarify that the shower is actually over the bath in the ensuite, as opposed to being a seperate shower.

I think as you are offering both a bath and a shower it won't put off potential buyers. Its the quality of what you offer that is important. I would guess that most people shower and have the ocassional bath and how many guests have a bath?

Sorry but I think it would put people off buying, especially if they have a young family, small children usually prefer baths.

If you want a double shower, how about putting the double shower in the en-suite and using the old bath with shower overhead in the bathroom. That shouldn't put people off, most couples would probably prefer it - except for my parents who both prefer baths.

I don't see that it would put off a young family.......I bath my kids in my en-suite bath. It worked brilliantly that way when I would bath the DTs together and I could put DD1 in my bed to watch telly. I could see and hear everyone.

Now, DD1 likes to shower and the DTs like to bath. All options covered.

And double showers look fab and are fab and that is a selling point. Sorry, I feel I am too passionate about bathroom chat

We currently tend to bath the kids in the en suite bath in our room as they can then go straight to our bed to get dry etc.

The ensuite is new (well, about 5 years old) and done just before we moved in. We wouldnt want to take the bath out.

The green bathroom is 30 years old. Hence why we'd like to replace.

Bit of a dilemma as your posts have already shown...

I think I'd go for the bath and shower in the en-suite too, and then the shower in the bathroom. I agree with frumpy. I think a shower would be the better option for guests and have the bath as a more personal option for the family. I mean, if guests wanted a bath so bad then they still could.

And OMG, the space in your bathroom for a slinky shower with delumtious tiles on floor and walls, a wet room maybe? I am way too passionate about bathroom chat. There must be a self-help forum.......

Are you planning on moving any time soon?
If not, then go with whatever you would prefer, as it seems from this thread that there's no consensus on what others would like anyway.

I would agree with wontsleep. DO what you want and would use.

In an ideal world:

Family bathroom with Bath and shower
Ensuit with double shower

But then I have boys are they would prob prefer just to shower as they get older

I dont think you can suit everyone and anything is better than green!!!!!

My mum has just had a wetroom put in downstairs and thinks it is great, but then she is going to end up needing a wheelchair and thats what drove the decision TBH

WEre it me, I'd make sure the bath was in the largest bathroom, so future buyers would be happy to bath their kids with enough space...

Bath in main bathroom. You need to appeal to as many people as poss when (one day) you are selling.

As long as there is at least one bath in the house I don't think it matters. How many bedrooms do you have, & are there any bathrooms or loos downstairs?

I re-did my bathroom recently. We have a 4-bed house but only one bathroom & a downstairs loo. I managed to squeeze in a walk-in shower and a bath (by knocking through a cupboard)- thought it essential as otherwise there wouldn't be a bath in the house unless we did the loft.

Meant to add; if you go for the double shower option, make sure it looks achingly fabulous so that future potential buyers won't actually notice...!

Wow. Lots of responses.

Ok. We'd like a double shower as for the next few years the kids can use it together (they are 4.5 and 1.10 at the moment).

Our en suite is a little bigger than our bathroom, which is why it makes sense to have a bath in there.

We do have a downstairs loo, the green bathroom with bath (with mixer tap shower),sink,loo and then the en suite with bath/shower, sink, loo.

I hate the green bathroom so it will go eventually. We plan to say here at least the next 2-3 years I would say.

anything will be an improvement on an avocado suite!
personally, I would go with the bath with shower over option for the main bathroom, As said above, a lot of people won't want kids traipsing through the master bedroom and also (as seems to come up on a lot of house programs on tv) people like to have a shower in the main bathroom and are sometimes put off by not having one.
if you want something different, why not go for a nice corner bath with shower over?

You definitely need to keep it a bit more typical if you're hoping to re-sell.

Double shower in the ensuite and a bath in the family bathroom. Sounds like you are going to make it fab but people can be quite traditional about this kind of thing and you also need to think about the family bathroom potentially being used by house guests and kind of showing off the house - it needs to look a bit more "proper" because it's the only one anyone else will really see!

You are of course right about anything being better than an avocado suite!!!

I'm still torn. The shower seems like the much more practical option for us as a family, but I really dont want to alienate potential buyers in the future. I didnt expect such a split on MN. I guess that shows some people wouldnt like no bath in the main bathroom.

my mum has just done that... put a really lovely double shower in her ensuite (but they did have a seperate shower and a normal size bath in the ensuite before)

it looks lovely...

they have made a beutiful sink area (rather than just a sink) as well and it really looks very nice.. and they still have a bath and seperate shower cubicle in the family bathroom.

she has a couple of estate agent friends who assure her it has not devalued the property in any way

As long as there is a bath it will be fine.I redeveloped a house once where the bathroom was v small in relation to the other rooms.I refitted it with a shower and put a bath freestanding in the huge main bedroom and it didn't affect the value at all and sold really easily.So don't worry People are a lot more flexible/adventurous with house layouts now it will be fine

watsthestory: I wouldn't not have a bath at all. Apart from the re-selling aspect (which probably doesn't matter to you at the moment) can you not envisage a moment when you really want to have a hot soak?

No bath in a house would put me off, definitely.
