I used to have a house like you describe and always wanted a plaid but couldn't afford it.

I like the plaid too but the charcoal is alreay tehre and i want to keep and dp assumed it was going.i love it though and plan just to change stairs to stripy grey black and stone runner to blend.

Would remind me of an office, how about a nice stripe ?

I plan to have stripes on the stairs and although i like stripes think it would look wrong with my other furniture etc.May have to scrap it if i don't like it once decorating done although i fear the kitchen renovations are going to take most of the budget.
