Wooden floor in kitchen Yes or No ?

Having an extension built and kitchen and back room will all be open plan . I would like wood flooring throughout ( not laminate ) as we already have a conservatory attached with a tile floor. I dont want three types of flooring with a small space i.e one for kitchen , one for diner room, one for conserbatory so I would like wooden floor through kitchen / diner .

I have conflicting advice from friends saying wooden floor is a no no in a kitchen . Any advice would be grateful .

We have open plan living room and kitchen with wooden floor throughout. It's great. Easy to clean and having only one type of flooring makes the room look bigger.

why is wooden flooring a no-no? my kitchen has a wooden floor and it is very wipeable which is a plus! also looks good. rented property, if it were mine I would get the ridges between the boards filled properly - that's the only downside that messy toddler food spillage can be a pain to get out of all the gaps. but a new wooden floor - why not???

no problems at all,there are no gaps for food tp fall through

I should think it depends on the type of floor. IMO good solid oldfashioned floorboards with a really durable finish would probably be OK but "floating floors" and hardwoods might not wear well, especially if any chance at all of dampness from sink, dishwasher etc.

I remember once visiting an open-plan type flat with oak flooring throughout, the kitchen floor was really badly stained and watermarked.

Sometimes you see floors with a few rows of tiles in front of the sink and cooker.

some people re saying no to wooden floor in kiychen because of water spillage , but as I have have read about engineered wooden flooring .

I love our wooden floor and want it through the rest of the house. A friend has just put down an oak effect Karndean floor. I will admit to wincing at the thought when she told me, but when I saw it,was very impressed.

I have a wooden floor in my kitchen. It is bamboo not laminate. I ( my opinion only )wish that I had the amtico type product. Looks fab with all the contrasting edges etc

I have just had a look at the Kardean flooring - very nice , might be an alernative.

Chocolateteapot - did you wince at the price or the thought of vinyl ?

We have Walnut engineered boards in our kitchen and I love it!! It really does hide a multitude - I sweep it regularly but sometimes forget when I last mopped as it shows up so little ,
In contrast, I used to be obsessive about mopping my old ceramic tiles and did it every day.

That company are great BTW - good prices and they are really knowledgeable if you phone up. You can get samples sent too. We used them in our old house and have had quite a bit from them now.

we've just had solid oak flooring put down in our kitchen/dining room as we wanted just one flooring and for it not to look too choppy if it had been tiles (in kitchen) and wood (in dining/living area). It looks fab and solid oak boards (over existing wooden floorboards and concrete)seem to have alot of variation in them (in colour and pattern) so I'm thinking it will be quite forgiving re-dirt. Don't care very much if it dents as I think this will age it nicely but am feeling a bit anxious about water spills. Still, it has a low sheen varnish on which I'm hoping will protect it.

you buy solid wooden floorboard that is designed to put in the kitchen/bathroom and utility room (take a look in B&Q).

We've got oak floorboards in the kitchen, and they seem to be pretty tough (we inherited them when we moved a year ago). The last owner put them in for the same reason as you - the kitchen is partly open plan to the sitting room, so it would look odd to have different floors.

I think he may have gone for reclaimed boards though, as they have a good worn and variable look to them, so any dents wouldn't show. Stains just wipe off.

We have a wooden floor - a Kahrs oak one - it looks good and is easy to clean. (much better than the quarry tiles we had in our last house). Water around the sink area hasn't been a problem.

The only area that stained due to dampness was under a potted plant where the collecing tray bit was leaky without me realising - but still doesn't look too bad.
