anyone painted a hardwood coffee table ?

have this acacia wood table and the colour of the wood looks crap on our oak floor.
I want to paint it cream but don't know what to use as primer and paint...any ideas gratefully accepted.

It looks really nice - painted cream it might look more like an Ikea piece of tutt. How about getting a rug to go under it to break up the clash between the oak and this wood?
