Ds still has his space themed room - very dark blue, though now without rockets! Now he's 11 he's keen for a new look - anyone know a fantastic undercoat to cover up very dark walls? Many thanks!

we painted over out dark red matt paint last summer..i had to paint it white first (silk) and then 2 coats of the colour....(soft truffle)

There is special white paint for this - we have something similiar going on in DS room and DH and I once had a dark purple bedrooom....

I think those one coat emulsions (Once etc)are good to cover up and tehn paint over with colour you like. Obviously, use white for first coat.

We were told by professional to use a cheap white emulsion for a couple of coats as the solo/one coat stuff if expensive.

It all depends on what colour you want to the final look to be.

It is always best to work over a white wall as it gives a true colour to the paint in the tin.

Special paint for this purpose so much more effective than the cheap white emulsion IME. One coat only, then 2 coats of new colour.

Yes thats what we di cheap white emulsion...it worked well.

TheFallenMadonna · 08/07/2008 18:38

I'm just lazy I think!

Idobelieveinfairies · 08/07/2008 18:39

lol...i would have probably gone for the lazy option too but we have extra high ceilings so i had to think cost!

swedishmum · 08/07/2008 20:03

Thanks - will go and look for the special stuff. I'm all for easy options. The dark blue ceiling and walls seemed like a good idea at the time.....

hi,
my dads a decorator and always suggests egg shell paint,
you get it from trade shops, covers every thing and you only need one coat.

Even covers felt tip pen etc !
