Would it be foolish to screw the slats onto DS1's new bed without a tape measure???

I've nearly finished assembling his cabin bed, only the slats that the mattress sits on left to do. It tells you how far apart the slats have to be - and I'm supposed to measure to the middle and screw the middle on in first.....

However, I can't find the tape measure (have a feeling that H took it as he took a load of DIY stuff when he moved out) , so would it be really foolish/dangerous to put all the slats on so that they are equal distance apart (by the eye) and do it that way???

I really wanted to get it finished tonight, so I can spend tomorrow doing his wardrobe. and get him in there tomorrow night...but if I have to go to town to buy a new one I won't get it done.

He's already going to be 4 days "late" (I promised in the middle of May that he would be into his new room by the end of June......) at least as it is and I don't really want to make it even longer....

How far apart do they have to be - I'll measure something & tell what is that long (eg paperback/biro/pack of butter)

Can honestly say we have never measured slats; just put the middle ones in and spread the rest apart evenly.

None of my children have perished as a result

Right 73mm is about 7 & a half centimeters

Umm fold a peice of A4 in half like a card then in half again - that is about right

Nah, just put one as close to the middle as possible then work your way out. I've done loads this way and nobody's ever fallen through!

FAQ · 03/07/2008 20:35

thanks everyone - I'll try the paper - and if that doesn't seem to be working I'll just go with the middle and work my way out,

I'm determined to get this room finished

How did it go?

FAQ · 03/07/2008 22:53

nearly finished - been on the phone to new man for the last 45 minutes so about to go and finish the slats off, then finish the chest of drawers that goes underneath and the desk.....and hopefully fit it all together
