Alternative to kallax?

So im looking at getting a 3x3 kallax with the boxes to go under my stairs to store bags, shoes, coats etc. i cant seem to find anything that would suit it better but im struggling to check out as kallax are just so ugly. And not my taste at all. I dont want veneer or white but i also cant spend a lot. Anyone here have any suggestions? TIA!

We have a coat rack but i mean for maybe my toddlers puddlesuits wellies etc, dogs bits and bobs so our dog walker can easily find them, etc etc. that style of storage definitely seems to be ideal. But it looks like such a graduate in a rental piece of furniture

Wayfair have some open geometric bookcases that have big square and rectangular spaces. You can also get storage units with baskets which are good for bits of sports kits, gloves and scarves etc.

We've got a Kallax unit in the grandkids room and they're just so practical but very functional rather than beautiful. Hence we swapped the generic boxes for some nice wicker ones we got online and it's vastly improved the appearance.

Perhaps tell us a bit more about what your taste is? Might help with the suggestions. I don’t think Kallax is the best for storing shoes tbh, it’s great for many things but perhaps a dedicated hallway solution might be better?

IKEA ivar is good for storage spaces and can be painted

but for an awkward space under stairs, I'd get built-in shelves that use all the space. anything from the shops will leave odd corners. Can you fix brackets to the back wall and put wooden boards across the full width?

The Futon Company do stacking boxes in white, bamboo or oak, this is the bamboo one:

Obviously it's a lot more expensive than the Kallax because it's made out of wood rather than particleboard. The white version is also a lot cheaper than the bamboo or oak, as it's MDF. But it is modular, so you wouldn't have to buy it all in one go and could add cubes as your budget allows.

Kallaxs are too chunky for shoe storage. Is it going in a cupboard under the stairs or in the actual hall?

Ikea do Kallax in grey, which look really nice. Sort of like beech ply. But not sure they do this colour in all sizes

Its under the stairs but its an open space as we dont have the budget for a joiner to make it a cupboard for a good few years. Not just for shoes but school bags, hats and coats, my work kit, but probably also a few pairs of shoes.. can keep most in our bedroom but the ones were in most days best down here im thinking. No space in our hall for proper shoe storage thanks to a radiator.

Ikea Trofast are technically toy storage units but they do a solid pine version which looks nice and is sturdy and you can get shelves for them instead of boxes (or boxes if you choose!)

They also do a stair shaped one which sounds like it might be particularly useful for under stair storage: TROFAST light white stained pine, Frame, 94x44x91 cm - IKEA UK

We had a wooden toy box for all our none shoe nonsense when mine were little. Hats, book bags and all that. It had the bonus of being a seat for putt on shoes and we called it ‘the hat box’ which made me feel like I was in Downton Abbey.

I agree with @parietalthat the ivar system might be a better choice. If you can fit a trofast in the space like @T1mesAreHardForDreamerssays that would be good too but they are ever so deep.
