What would you do with with this space?

It’s built over the stairs in our new (small) master bedroom. Leaning towards just painting neutral and making into a dressing table area with make up and toiletries etc but not sure if I’m not being creative enough and missing a bit of a trick to do something. Good witb it . We curently have builders in doing en suite and kitchen, ao any work needs to be done in The next few weeks.. the cupboard on the left is over the stairs hence the angle. Had thought about extending sliding wardrobes across but fear that would make the room even smaller

any ideas welcome! Actually will post what ChatGPT came up with too

I'd do away with two shelves and just have one. I'd also choose thinner shelf; the ones currently there are very chunky and overwhelm the space a bit.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 18/10/2026 20:58

That’s a good idea, thanks

I like the dressing table suggestion

also a mini breakfast kitchen if you have a big house?

or I would probably make a reading nook with bookshelves and a comfy chair

Ohhelpwhatnow · 18/10/2026 21:02

It looks crowded. Either simple shelving or a chest of drawers with a plain wall behind would look better. Or built in drawers or shoe rack up to the ceiling would be useful and elegant but more expensive.

I’d redo the wallpaper as well as repaint

Yy wallpaper def coming off.

the house is big downstairs but smaller upstairs so am leaning more towards dressing area much as love the idea of reading nook. Already have study/living and living/diner /kitchen

If you make a dressing area make sure you invest in really good lighting

BeardySchnauzer · 18/10/2026 21:08

Also the ChatGPT photo looks really cluttered - I’d get some wall storage for make up etc

TheStepboardisfullofbitteroddos · 18/10/2026 21:14

I much prefer the current colour to your ai neutral! It looks a bit budget all in white. I'd keep the green but change the wallpaper to something lighter and a bit more current. And I'd swap the shelves for wood with brackets- their chunky to hide the floating shelf attachments. And I'd probably chnage the bottom to either all drawers or cupboard or open to be a dressing table.

Make the whole thing more up to date, and less heavy looking, prints on one wall, bit of fun and whimsy. Small spaces can have more personality. Frilly or statement lightshade. I'd get builder to put power in there if there's not- charging drawer at the top and appliances drawer for hair tools at the bottom.

I think the downward diagonal is the stairs? So you can’t really make knee space

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 18/10/2026 21:41

Could your builder/carpenter make a pull out desk top under or over the worktop on the unit?

That way you could use that area as an office freeing up space in your living room.

Some lighting and sockets for charging things up would be handy.

You'd have a quieter space with plenty of built in storage and you can close the doors on it all when you finish work.

How about a home office?

I’d probably go for built-in storage with shelves and cupboards, especially if you’re short on space elsewhere. You could keep the everyday essentials hidden away and use the upper shelves for things you don’t need very often. Keeping the design light would also help if the landing is quite dark.

If it were me, I’d have turned it into a built-in wardrobe for extra storage. I’m desperate for more storage space!

dudsville · Yesterday 10:35

Walk in one-sided wardrobe?

I have a friend with something similar but a different shape. She's changed it twice so far trying to make use of it.

Studyunder · Yesterday 22:18

I’d have storage space: deep drawer for footwear, hooks for coats, scarves and bags; a hat shelf. More hooks or cuddy holes for kit, eg swim kit, beach kit. I have the world’s smallest hallway downstairs though, so this would be my idea of heaven!
