DIY Specials from Landlord - Fed up

We rent a pretty expensive apartment. It’s not expensive relative to others but the landlord bought the flat for 1/5th its current value, 30 years ago. We fork out over £4k every month for somewhere that gets grottier by the day.

Landlord is a nice guy but insists on “DIY”ing everything. Every fix he tries to do himself has variously ended up in a muck up that needs further work to fix.

Everything seems to break. In the space of 9 months, the fridge freezer broke down, there have been multiple bathroom leaks requiring him to visit every weekend for two months, the oven broke twice, the dishwasher broke, the curtain pole fell off the walls. The toilet flush broke. The sink tap broke. None of these things are fixed by professionals. We are honestly careful people.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? The flat would be great otherwise!

£4k per month for a flat?? Where?!

Oh no, this sounds really irritating and not acceptable actually.
I think move out and get one with an overseas landlord or managed by an agency so you don't have to deal with the LL. Or tell him if he doesn't stop wasting your time, you're going to reduce the rent.
He sounds like a tight not to mention exceptionally untalented.

@Kay00 London I imagine

What he bought it for 30 years ago is not really relevant. £4k is a lot by anyone's standards, you are in the right to expect a good quality of repairs. i would be looking to rent somewhere else to be honest.

@ladinamazina agree with PP. landlord will be looking at yield and ROI. If the property is now worth £1m he’s probably thinking he should probably sell it if repairs become expensive, possibly why he’s trying to keep costs down and self manage.

Just give notice and find somewhere in good order and a more professional approach.

How is when he bought the property relevant exactly? It seems an awful lot of things to have broken in 1 year. He can replace the fridge freezer and dishwasher and right the cost off against his tax bill. The same with the tap. Strange he doesn't tbh. If you are not satisfied with the accommodation give notice. You should be able to find a top quality flat for £4k a month.
