Are shutters usually this expensive for two front windows?

I've been looking at shutters for the 2 front windows of my home. I don't know if it's the usual, but the price has shocked me. Quotes around 1400-1700. Seems excessive for 1 small and 1 large window.

That said, never had them before.
Now thinking if there are any other options. We have blinds currently.

Yes sounds about right - they are not a cheap option!

Tortephant · 05/10/2026 14:18

That sounds very competitive, I was expecting higher

A good pair of made to measure curtains for a big window is over £1000. Sounds fine to me.

We paid 2K for just our front room bay window about 10 years ago and then did the rest of the house one year at a time from there. I have to say they are lovely and the quality and craftsmanship is superb, no regrets at all.

Mirrorxxx · 05/10/2026 14:22

Seems about right. I paid 3500 in 2021 for 3 small windows and 2 bay windows

Meredusoleil · 05/10/2026 14:24

This thread has reminded me why we are sticking with blinds 😳

I had quite a shock when I casually asked what the price difference would be if we got shutters rather than the new blinds that the man was measuring for. I think he said £1000 for our front room window (medium sized, not a bay).

msmillicentcat · 05/10/2026 15:02

I paid £2400 for a large bay and a small bay so sounds about right.

StealthFrog · 06/10/2026 06:45

Obviously is just their price, thank you.
Just seemed a lot for PVC and normal windows (not bays).

Are they good for light? I don’t want to lose light, but equally want to be decent light blocked at night so I don't need curtains.

Watching with interest. How big are both your windows, OP? I am considering same. My fall back is Roman Blunds but DD29 said those are ‘dated’. What would you do instead? Do you need the room to be kept draught free etc?

rose69 · 06/10/2026 07:51

Shutters don’t block out light completely despite what sales people may say.

MyballsareSandy2015 · 06/10/2026 07:56

We had blackout blinds put in behind our bedroom shutters.

Has anyone used the online shutter companies where you put in your measurements and fit them yourself? They click in apparently.

Im thinking of that for the spare rooms.

Small is 110cm w and 133cm high
Big is 220cm wide and 133cm high

Apologies, wasn't finished.
I am not too sure what to do. It's privacy mostly, but need one of them to be fairly dark too, so reading from a PP that they're not that blocking does worry me

I actually tried one of these quotes over the weekend, just out of curiosity. For the small window, for the same lay out as quotes already received - it was coming out at £600. In our case it would work out more expensive.

Which company? That price seems about right but if someone came out to measure (like Thomas Sanderson) they expect you to negotiate like when buying a car. I love my shutters but I have bays. I have shutters on bottom half only then half blinds on some rooms curtains on other depending on the formality of the room.

We have used the shutter shop online for half height Antigua shutters. The first was a large window in 2021 and we paid £250 including £40 delivery. A slightly smaller window in 2025 was £150, I assume as we weren't in the midst of a pandemic and materials were back in stock. They did a black Friday sale in 2025 and free delivery at that point and they arrived just before Christmas. Excellent shutters and excellent communication from them regarding delivery.

Half height gives us light but privacy from head height outside.
