Skip - can't just throw things in?

Have a skip after months of waiting. Builder said he would be over to put everything in it this morning and of course hasn't turned up. Skip meant to be being collected tomorrow (hmm, it took 5 months to arrive so not convinced) but builder said on the phone I can't just put things into it. I just want to lob all of the bags of wood and rubbish we have into it (nothing hazardous) but he said the skip company would tell him off! Tbh it stinks and is battered and filthy, so I can't understand what the issue is. Can anyone enlighten me because I am feeling hormonal enough to lift the bags by myself just to get them off my lawn where they have been killing my grass for months...

Just stand everything which is flat such as doors, cupboard doors, etc around the edge, then put the rest of the rubbish in as neatly as possible so as to save space.

Is could be your builder has only agreed to put certain things in the skip. Items may be recycled or disposed of separately such as timber, rubble or metals. Other things may need to be disposed of in a different way such as insulation.

some skip companies charge a higher price if the waste is mixed and has to all go to landfill.

a lot of skip companies do have restrictions. we put a mattress in and had to pay an extra £30. i would be clear what can go in get the builder back to do it or he will end having to pay extra money which will impact on you

If you know the company (name on the skip?) call and ask. Give your address and builders name if he's the one who booked it and just say you're going to start filling it yourself today what restrictions are there for this skip.

Then do it really neatly. As pp said big flat stuff tends to get put round the sides (to make them a bit higher) and being neat gets more in.

If your builder is so concerned about his reputation with the skip company, then he needs to get his arse round to yours to do the job he said he would do. If not, you'll put it in the skip in the fastest way possible and he can deal with the consequences.

Err this. Builder is being controlling about your skip, that you have paid for and is on your drive!!

Usually the stuff in the skip gets sorted and recycled. The hire rate may have been based on what was going in it so they can't take random other stuff. Putting something in a skip doesn't make it magically disappear at the other end. Check with the builder what you can put in.

It does seem like the builder and the skip company need to get their arses in gear though. If we book one we can have it delivered next day.

FlorenceLawrence · 05/10/2026 13:39

5 months??
You can get skips on same day delivery around here.
My kitchen has just been demolished, and I must say they have loaded the skip extremely neatly.
But a couple of years ago we had builders who just lobbed everything in willy nilly.

Yes, ring and ask. They might charge you a bit more if needed. We had a skip for our kitchen and they let us put our asbestos shed roof in for an extra £60.

Tortephant · 05/10/2026 13:44

skips are normally delivered same day or next working day and with you until you book a collection, although if longer than two weeks extra is often charged.
Only time there would be a lead time is if you need a permit to put it on the road.

Rollercoaster1920 · 05/10/2026 13:44

Presumably skip hire and rubbish removal are part of the contract and builder's responsibility? So don't touch it.

Also as frustrating as it is - you don't need to do that work, and you might get hurt.

SmallDFartyCarNRG · 05/10/2026 14:24

Thanks all. Went for a long dog walk to cool off. As some of you have noted waiting 5 months for a skip is not normal, nor is having builders doing a 2 week job taking 6 months and I am at the end of my rope. Half of me thinks it would be therapeutic to go out there like a wailing flailing banshee and hurl everything into it, but the other half is conscious my health isn't the best and hurting myself or causing myself extra expense is holding me back.

No company name on the side, it looks very old and well used. All I have is old wood and garden waste, which I would have thought could have gone to the tip in a van. There's an old ironing board I added and a couple of smaller metal items. I strongly suspect he is going to use it for other waste from other jobs but don't want to give myself an aneurysm worrying about what might happen.

Really just want to plant before the frost, which of course he doesn't give a shiny shit about after killing every plant that was there over the summer. I think he would rather I left it looking like a clay desert.
Grrr.
