Thoughts on 1400mm bath

I am having my bathroom renovated. The bath with the shower over it is 1700mm but I was thinking of putting in 1400mm bath so I could add some storage.

We hardly use the bath but I think its important to have one.

Has anyone had a 1400mm x 700mm bath?

I wouldn't. Basically you are giving yourself a step into shower. Either go full size or get rid of the bath (depending upon how long you will stay there and who is likely to buy your home next).

I have a bath of that size so I could have a bf separate step in shower. Very occasionally have a bath but the shower is still amazing

Would it be a freestanding extra deep one? If so, l would but l am only just over 5 foot

It depends - I have a 120mm bath in my ensuite, which when I moved in I thought was ridiculous - but it turns out that as a 5' tall person it's actually a perfect size to lie back and read without half drowning if your food slips. It helps that it's a relatively deep one too, so I can fully immerse my whole body with my head out, or securely dunk my head and push myself back up with only my knees poking out the water as I do it.

Are you short? Is the bath for you or are you thinking you'll sell soon?

How about a japanese soaking tub if you want the space?

It sounds like you're going all out and living your best life in your bathtub - all power to you Grin

ROFL - Foot not Food (although would also be terrible if I did have food in the bath and it slipped.. I tend to just stick with the traditional glass of wine rather than anything solid :D )

I have 1500mm x 700mm bath in our downstairs bathroom. We were originally going to have it as a shower room but with three young kids the bath made sense. It works absolutely fine for both a bath and a shower,it gets more use than the standard size bath in the upstairs bathroom. I would take storage space over a longer bath, although I am short (155cm)

Try an omnitub - it's basically a Japanese soaking tub mixed with a British style bath so you can still have a shower over it. I think this is what we will eventually do. (Although I would love a separate Japanese one!)

Thanks, I could stretch to 1500 maybe, I just can't help but think the 1700mm bath used infrequently is such a waste of space. I would love to have the time for a long soak but by the time that happens I will probably need a hoist to even have a bath 😀

I saw these and was interested but then wondered if they are too high to climb into. I see some have like a ladder. 😬

Our bath is a 120mm bath and we find it ideal as neither my husband or I are tall

That would be a great size but I assume most people would have to sit in it rather than attempt to stretch out.

We had 140 cm bath and I found it utterly useless as 5ft3 person. Maybe if you get a extra deep one it could be ok. But then I would definitely want a separate shower as climbing into the extra deep bath for every shower sounds pita and a slipping hazard.

I kind of thought you'd have to do a tiled steps up to them - maybe in a corner. So I guess you'd then also lose space for that and it depends on your room layout and size. Plus I think I'd put a handle in the wall for future proofing. However I dream of sitting upright in water up to my neck with wine and book. And I don't really want a hot tub style and don't have space for separate bath and shower. The more I research the more expensive it becomes!

muddyford · 06/10/2026 08:58

I wouldn't bother. I wouldn't buy a house with one. But I prefer a shower.

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 06/10/2026 09:04

Depending on ceiling height and whether you can incorporate some built-in steps you may want to consider something like this https://www.omnitub.co.uk/products/deep-seated-tub-1350x700x1000 which makes the bath a really luxurious experience as you can soak up to your neck despite the shorter length. You build in a step outside the tub so when you want a shower you have to step up and down, so not at all suitable for anyone a bit elderly and unstable but if you are fit and well it's fab.
