Och, we just signed the papers saying goodbye to our home in Italy. We lived the dream for a bit and then it was time to moved on. I loved that house. The shutters, the stone, the spiral stairs, the beautiful ancient walls, the view. It was right to let it go but I’m super sad today.

When we leave this home there will be tears, it was our dream home. I can remember the first time we viewed, we were so excited, full of optimism. We have been here 15yrs but circumstances change and its the right time to downsize. Your home in italy sounds lovely and you are entitled to grieve the ending of that chapter of your life. The way I look at it tho is homes are never really ours, we are merely passing through. Houses have their own stories and you are part of that.

I get it. My family have had a house in Spain for 26 years, before that another house since the 1970s. My parents lived there six months of the year - my father had a stroke there which he eventually died from. My late DH and I would holiday there twice a year, once at Easter when my parents were still there and again in summer when they had escaped the heat to London. Our children have gone there since they were weeks old. We’ve let friends use it.
But my kids are not old enough (21 and 23) to have families of their own, my siblings live in the US. During covid no one could go there for four years. It’s big (two houses), it has eight acres. It has spectacular views of the sea and mountains. I’ve scattered some of my parents and my late husband’s ashes there. But we have to sell it. It costs us thousands of euros in tax and maintenance. We can’t justify keeping it when it’s empty most of the year. It has taken years to sort out the estate but we are now ready to put it on the market. But we are heartbroken.

@mondaytosunday i hear you. I think houses that have held key life moments are so special. And when they are beautiful or specially located too, they are truly irreplaceable.

@2longinthetooth you’re right. We were custodians and now it is time for another chapter for the house. The new owner volunteered that she would be happy for us to stay a week or two each year which is so sweet! Who knows if she means it but it was really kind to acknowledge what it has been for us- all the details and love we put into it, we are delighted she loves them.
