Would a 1500 x 900 kitchen island work in this layout?

1500 x 900mm Island in this kitchen, Would it work? Is it a useful size - I get it is a t the modest end of the spectrum.

Would probably have just the one stool facing the sliding doors (my daughter is the main one who uses stools).

Another question, in the second picture which is the architect drawings, he ran the units 35cm short if the sliding doors. Why would they not run up to the sliding doors like in picture 1? It's only 35cm but it looks like it would make a difference and the island would look a bit less naturally positioned.

The island would have 1.3m gap to dining table under the sky light and top left corner would be snug/TV.

You don’t want the units running up to the sliding doors because a) you will catch yourself on the corners and b) it will look odd.
As to the islanders difficult to comment with no dimensions in the picture. Is the image showing the 1.5m x 900 island or something different? Is so it does look a little tight on the right side, another reason for reducing the length of the wall units.

Personally, I think it would work better with a peninsular. We used to have the arrangement on your drawings (although slightly shorter island) and it really didn't work very well. When you're preparing food etc you sort of gravitate towards the long side of the island, but that then means you're facing away from the dining table and also you're perpendicular to the cooker (assuming that's on the back wall).

Also, not sure whether it's just how it's been drawn, but there doesn't seem to be much of a gap between the long sides of the island. How wide is the kitchen? You really need a minimum of 100cm between the island and other worktops/wall.

thanks, yeah kitchen width is 3.2m so minus 60cm for right side counter and 90cm for Island gives 170cm so can only be 85cms aisles either side.

I read 1m is advisable but 85 to 90 is just about doable if it is not a long aisle but a short pinch point. Current kitchen has a peninsula with 70cm pinch point as you enter the kitchen and it's never been a problem.

Are you planning to have seating on one side? It's one thing having a pinch point under 1 metre, it's another having someone standing at an island preparing food and needing to move every time someone else wants to enter or leave the kitchen. If you don't have seating then it's probably more doable.

Maybe tape it out on the floor and then pretend you're using the kitchen and see how it works?

Sorry, just seen that you're only having 1 seat. I still think it's very tight.

Our kitchen is 3.7m wide and we have a 65cm wide island. With 60 cm units each side you get about 1m space to walk around and I wouldn’t want it any less.

Thanks, yeah, probably going to have to go for a peninsula in this case then. It's unfortunate, another meter and it would be perfect but I am sure that is the case with many kitchen plans.

Is there any way that you could swap the room round and have the kitchen part at the opposite end and the dining table and sliding doors at the bottom end? Your potential island could borrow a bit of circulation space from the snug area then, or would that make the snug too tight?

Whilst it's possible, those are internal or party walls. I know extraction and plumbing can be done in that way but I decided against it as it adds complexity and cost.and probably wouldn't be as effective having convoluted extraction. It would solve the problem I asked though I agree but I would prefer the efficiency of all the services on that wall, by the existing drains etc

Yes I think a 1500mm x 900mm would work depending on the size of the room. Everything has to be in proportion though. Good luck. These decisions are hard.

Just seen your post re probably going for a peninsula which is what we did in the end as it suited out our room so much more and I am delighted with our decision. So many people shoehorn an island in when they shouldn’t.
