Wooden floor expert anyone ?

Hi having tongue & groove engineered flooring fitted soon. Really like the look of solid oak skirting boards BUT my place has a lot of condensation in Winter and apparently they don't cope with damp as well as MDF.

Anyone had the above combination fitted please ? Any regrets, or problems with it ? Apparently it might have to be fitted by a carpenter so more complicated than first thought.

Condensation is water. Where is it coming from? A leak? Faulty bathroom extractor? Groundwater? Do you drape wet washing over radiators?

No its just a ground floor flat, they suffer from condensation, no leaks, no wet washing

Before putting down any flooring, could you have additional insulation installed to stop the condensation? We don't have condensation issues but recently renovated a derelict property. We were looking at engineered wood, but ended up with solid wood which was strangely cheaper than some of the engineered wood options! It has a 100yr warranty too.

Solid oak skirting can look great with engineered flooring, but with regular condensation, I’d focus on controlling the moisture in the room first.
Try to keep the room well ventilated and avoid drying clothes indoors where possible. A dehumidifier can also help keep humidity down during winter. I’d also ask the flooring installer to check the moisture levels before fitting the flooring and skirting.
If the condensation is heavy or keeps coming back, it’s worth finding the cause before fitting the new flooring.
Has anyone else had solid oak skirting in a room that gets quite damp?

We had solid wood floors fitted by a floor fitter experienced in solid wood floors last house no problem. This house we had one fitted downstairs and there have been issues. It seems to be related to moisture levels - we have no leaks or wet washing but a very old house and we were advised recently we may need damp proof membrane laying first and they took moisture levels on a damp metre and said it was 5% and needed to be 2%. Though definitely not an expert.

Had this problem myself and decided to lay porcelain wood effect tiles.
They were a fairly new product supplied by Mandarin Stone. They are pretty convincing being sold in planks of 120cm x 20cm.

So where is the water coming from? Ventilation and extractors should remove steam from kitchen and bathroom.

In an old house, damp might rise up through the floor.

There are cold water pipes inside flat which drip with water in Winter but insulation will sort that. As said b4 moisture ncondensation common in flats - air cant dissipate upstairs!

Sorry you had that, they should have laid dpm first. Is why chose engineered flooring copes better with humidity
