What do new windows cost?

Anyone have a rough idea what new windows cost? We’re looking to replace a bay window consisting of 6 narrow windows, plus 2 more windows. Been quoted £8151.

That sounds about right

AplineDaisies · 15/09/2026 20:47

Assuming you've had 3 quotes ?

Autumnlife · 15/09/2026 20:48

Yes that sounds like a decent quote given it’s for a big bay window and two others.

MiceSpiders · 15/09/2026 20:53

Wow that's crazy, so if I wanted to replace two large bays , two what I would call tall narrow windows two average/large sized windows , 3 medium sized windows and then a big window about 2.8m x 2.2m how much is that going to cost 40k+?! I'd be better off moving to somewhere with newer windows! That also doesn't count the glass back door and the three windows either side and above the front door 🙈

Lonelycrab · 15/09/2026 20:54

Sounds completely plausible, although without knowing the spec (dimensions, cheap pvc vs wood) it’s hard for anyone to say really. But it’s ballpark, given the lack of info.

dogsaremybusiness · 15/09/2026 20:59

It’s a bay window if six panes and another one window consisting of 2 panes. Seems a lot to me!!

Our quote for the whole house was £22k !! Madness!!

Yes it is a lot.

Mark up on windows is usually pretty brutal, once you know the unit cost.

The other way to approach it, is to measure and order the units yourself, and have a good builder that you have a good relationship with for install. This may well not be possible for you.

So companies will want to make a decent profit from the job.

See also; front doors.

That's around the right ballpark depending upon the spec. What were you expecting?

Chose some local 'smaller' firms too. You could also ask them if you could see their work in situ.

We found the smaller firms actually charged more (this was in 2018)!

After our chosen joiner ghosted us having made just half of the windows we'd commissioned, we ordered the DG units online and actually made them ourselves, saving a huge amount of £££ 😉

Less than £8k!

I guess in my mind, it's only 2 windows! Albeit the bay window is 6 separate panes. My neighbour with the exact same house has a flat window, so they would pay £1k, yet I will have to pay £6k!

You can compromise on quality and look and fit, but thats false economy really. You will easily cover the cost when you come to sell if you do it properly.

Acoya or Hardwood/Redwood? Which region?

Tortephant · 16/09/2026 14:56

Do they need replacing or could you repair them?

They really need replacing. The wood is starting to rot and the panes all have condensation inside.

Have you got drip grooves under the sills?

has the glass blown or just subject to damp in the frames?

find a local joiner, it’s not always easy but somebody will repair them and solve what ever is causing the issue at the same time.

bababamama · 16/09/2026 15:04

Try a local company, not one that’s part of a national chain. They are usually most reliable too

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 16/09/2026 15:04

Where is the quote from? A big nationwide firm or local. We always found local firms cheaper. It used to cost approx £500 per window- obviously a bay is equivalent to several windows and it was quite a while ago we had ours last done. £8000 sounds really steep though!

yonem · 16/09/2026 15:13

That sounds like a lot. We paid £12.8k earlier this year for composite front door, side door, french doors, bay window, and 7 other windows. The bay window was originally 10 panes (5 long ones and 5 short ones) but we replaced the middle 6 with a big picture window. Is your quote for wooden frames? They are more expensive than UPVC.

Restlessinthenorth · 16/09/2026 15:13

Not sure where you are in the country, but there is considerable regional variation. Someone I know well who has a small business in Yorkshire has ended up having numerous clients in the south as even when factoring in travel and accommodation, he can often be way, way cheaper.

Sounds like you for a quote from one of the big national chains. They all operate in similar way. Ridiculously over inflated prices, then give you fake discounts and high pressure sales tactics till you sign on the dotted line,
and you still end up paying two or three times
what you should be paying.

Go to a recommended independent local company, who will give you an honest price with none of the BS.

Got a quote from a small firm with great reviews - £4200!

KnickerlessParsons · 19/09/2026 18:37

Ours worked out about £1k per window - we have a mix of large and small. So that sounds a little high to me.
