Are you tall? One of the ovens looks very high?

Glitterfish · 09/09/2026 10:36

It seems right height when measured but I'll double check.

The room is very high 2.7m and kitchen design program doesn't reflect this.

Where is the sink?

It seems an odd place to put your ovens - very little space to the side of it to put down hot dishes/trays.

capelmustard · 09/09/2026 10:48

My thoughts

move the sink as far to the right as space allows then you can move the hob to the right so you have usable space on the left of the hob

what is in front of the window, beside the oven?
will that unit allow enough space to open the larder door on the right?

capelmustard · 09/09/2026 10:51

Are you sure there's enough space in the middle of the room for a table? You'll need 80/100 cm clearance between the hob/sink area and the table, otherwise it will be too cramped and potentially dangerous with pans of boiling water, etc

LibertyLily · 09/09/2026 11:45

Imo, the ovens and hob need moving to where there's space both sides for placement of hot trays/pans and plating up. Not only that, but it looks odd having both on the ends of cabinet runs. Could the cabinets not extend under the other window (2nd pic) adjacent to the hob?

What is the room width? Unless it's a very narrow table, like @capelmustard says, it looks like it might be tight. We once had an antique dining table that was 75cm wide (and 2.15m long) which fitted in a long but narrow dining space but in reality was too narrow for comfortable use. Most rectangular tables are 90cm wide and our round one is 120cm diameter.

Glitterfish · 09/09/2026 16:49

Room is 4m wide and there seems to be plenty of room for table and chairs when walked out. Thinking of swapping ovens and fridge placement. Don't think we need kitchen to extend under second window as would be very near entrance door. Sink is currently under bay window would hob be better there?

Ideally you'd have worktop space on either side of the hob - it seems really odd to have it right at the end of the worktop.

Has this design been done by a kitchen specialist?

crazymommaclub · 09/09/2026 17:55

I would add a small return / breakfast bar after the hob as it will help partition the room and give you space to prepare food and put ingredients to the side of where you’re cooking

capelmustard · 09/09/2026 22:08

4m width should be fine for a table in the centre of the room, it can be hard to get a proper perspective from these kinds of plans!

It would work better to swap the placement of the hob and sink, it will give you more of a cooking zone, which works better than both being at opposite ends of a run of units.

It's also really useful to have your dishwasher beside the sink. Also think about where you're going to store pots/pans/china/glasses/cutlery. It's good to have them in close proximity to the dishwasher, rather than on the other side of the room, it makes unloading the dishwasher much quicker and easier.

Definitely try to have some space for dishes on either side of the sink, and I like to fit in the largest sink possible, at least one that's big enough for a roasting dish.

MongoosePerfume · 10/09/2026 06:43

This is a really poor layout. The job just looks like it’s been stuck on the end as an afterthought and you have very limited worktop. Can you get the oven incorporated into the tall bank of units to the side and extend the worktop and upper cupboards? (I wouldn’t just swap the fridge).

Advocodo · 10/09/2026 09:34

I agree with other posters that the hob needs some space either side.

I also agree that the hob needs some worktop on the other side. How close to the door is that second window?

And this is a personal preference, but I'd swap the ovens over to the bank of tall cabinets on the other side. I don't like the way they start below the worktop level and end above the bottom of the upper cupboards. I think with the low bit (window seat?) next to that, and the boxed in beam or pipes on the other side of that, you have too many different heights and depths.

BIWI · 10/09/2026 11:24

@Glitterfish can you show us a floor plan? Perhaps we can be a bit more helpful!

Glitterfish · 26/09/2026 11:08

I've taken your advice and moved ovens but can't move stove - where else would it fit. Anyway I'm happy enough where it is and may have one of those mobile islands to side. Updated plan attached.
I'm now onto trying to decide on floor and worktops. Recommendations welcome.
House is old farmhouse with deep windows and will soon have lime plaster walls. 4m wide and 7m long room. I plan to have pellet stove and small sofa etc at far end. Table in middle of kitchen. I really want a table with resin river.

Have you sat down with the kitchen designer at IKEA @Glitterfish? That might help you work something out. The hob position is still not great - you have hardly any prep space there.

user427654 · 26/09/2026 12:27

How much space is there between the end of your cupboards/worktop and the door frame to the left?

And are you ending the workspace on that end before the window because if you don't it will interfere with the placement of the table? Or for another reason?

parietal · 26/09/2026 12:37

I think you need something completely different. You can’t fit the stuff you need in the awkward corners on that plan.

in this version, you build in front of the window- you don’t have to change the window, just let the window run behind the worktop and sink (s) to get much more space.

so here is have high cupboard and oven (C O) on the left. Then sink on front of the window. Then more high cupboard (C).

in the middle is a big island with hob H and plenty of worktop and storage below.

a peninsula could also work if you don’t like an island, but you need to make more use of the centre of the room.

My feedback on Your new plan:

oven position is very wrong. You need to have a work space next to it to place hot oven trays on. Many times I get something out the oven and realise it’s too hot to handle, or is spilling over so I need to put it down ASAP.

you need a min of 30cm between a sink and any electric points or electric hob.

corner units are a waste of space as they are really hard to access. You’re better off having a straight run of units. You can then put the oven in a tower unit at the end, and have worktop space next to it.

then your opposite wall can be full or storage and/or a ladder unit for appliances.

google ‘straight run kitchens’.

go to a few kitchen suppliers and ask them to design you a kitchen. See what they come up with. Wren, Magnet, Howdens

Don't you just set oven stuff on the open oven door if you have one of those high up ones?

Jackospice · 26/09/2026 12:56

Is the bit under the window quite low down? It looks too low to use as a surface space so are you planning for it to be a snug and cosy place to sit? In which case I wouldn’t put the oven right next to it.
the tall cupboards on the right look really annoying to get into as well.

do you definitely need 2 ovens? We got two, I thought it was a necessity, but tbh I only use two at Christmas. It’s a lot of wasted space for us though our kitchen is smaller.
is your dishwasher to the right of the sink? If so it’s near the ovens in the first pic which feels like a trip hazard. I can’t tell where it is in the second.
in the second, where do you go when you take something out the oven? Where are you putting it down?
I would have the stove in the corner personally, further away from little children hands or for older people to fall into, you can make a nice feature of a gorgeous backsplash
you’re all facing the walls too, which seems a bit antisocial if you’re having people sit on the other end of the kitchen, it could feel like one bit social family living space, but it doesn’t right now. It just doesn’t feel like you’re making the best of the space you’ve got tbh. I’d definitely sit down with a kitchen designer and get them to have an initial look, it’s free and you can always tweak it.

canklesmctacotits · 26/09/2026 13:29

Your hob placement is completely wrong.

At the very least with the first design, you’d switch ovens and hob: you need worktop space either side of a hob, and you need worktop space at least on one side of the ovens. You can have the ovens opposite the sink but be prepared to use the table to put hot stuff on - and make sure you can open the oven doors if someone is sitting at the table (unlikely given your dimensions).

I think you’re trying to do too much. You don’t have that much space. You should look for a stove/cooker, something that has a stovetop with hob on top. That would go next to the window seat. Keep your sink under the window and have the fridge opposite it. You need to make maximum use of wall space for storage so where your hob was on the first design should be wall to ceiling larder cupboards.

Picture no 2 from @holiday22is close to my suggestion, just a different size of window

Lastgig · 28/09/2026 19:12

How old is the old farmhouse?
This is very modern looking kitchen.

Have you looked at local bespoke kitchen companies? They often match magnet, Wren etc

I've had 17 houses mainly listed. My favourite kitchen of all time was a cream bespoke painted wood.
