Help with what to search for a shower riser with controls on the opposite wall

I am looking for a shower riser with the controls to go on a separate wall, so not underneath the shower head like they usually are, but I just don't know what to look for. Does anyone know what I mean and what I should be looking for? I've seen this, but it looks like the shower head attaches to the bottom. I like this one as it has a safety feature which should mean no scalding or freezing if someone uses water elsewhere in the house, so the same feature would be very good to have if on another model.

To have the controls on another wall you need a fixed wall mounted shower head with no hose. Also buy separate shower controls with no hose. (the water supply between controls and shower is carried via pipes concealed in the wall rather than via a hose). Ask your plumber to install the shower head on one wall and the controls on the other and create the required concealed plumbing arrangement between them.

Be prepared for this to cost a fair bit extra to the usual (much easier to install) arrangement of controls directly under the shower head, and involve some resistance from the plumber. Also, this is all much easier if both the shower head wall and the controls wall are stud walls rather than solid brick etc.

@minipie thank you. The contractor we have hired is on board with the idea. The wall the shower head will be on will be a stud wall and the controls could also be in a stud wall if they are in front of you as you step into the shower tray and the shower head would be to the right. I will search again tomorrow and see what I can find.
Just reread your post. Do you mean we can't have a riser shower head? I don't want a fixed one. Thinking about it, the shower in our bathroom (this is an accessible downstairs shower room we are having installed) has the controls on the adjacent wall and we have a shower head on a riser.
We shouldn't be charged more as we have had and agreed on our quote, not an estimate. I hope to god we won't be charged more.

Oh ok. So in your other shower with riser on one wall and controls on the adjacent wall, presumably the hose must hang sort of diagonally across the corner? If you’re happy with this, then that’s an option yes. IMO it would look a bit messy compared with the concealed version but does have the benefit of being cheaper and easier to fix if it ever goes wrong.
I don’t think you need to search for anything special if this is what you’re after, just make sure you get an extra long shower hose.

MellowSubmarine · 02/09/2026 08:09

I don’t know the cost because it was in the house before we moved in, but we have a Mira shower with a wireless control panel. So the shower head is at one end of the bath, and the little box/panel thing is screwed into the wall at the other end.

Tortephant · 02/09/2026 08:35

Just done this OP.

you want to look for “concealed” valve not exposed.

1 outlet for a fixed head. 2 outlet for a fixed head and handheld. 3 outlet for gets, shoulders or anything extra.

what you have linked to holds a shower hose so this isn’t what you want.
These are the screwfix options

Tortephant · 02/09/2026 08:37

If you want a riser rather than this is for a concealed, but I agree you’d be best with a head and handset not on a rail visulally

or this is all your components without a riser

hope this helps you work out what you are looking for

As others have said, you need a concealed thermostatic valve. Ours is from Vado.

Maybe a Mira digital shower ?

The mixing of the water is done in a box which you site in the wall or attic or under the bath and the dial control for on/off and temperature can be anywhere as there’s a 5m wire out of it that plugs into the mixer box. The mixer is a little big bigger than an a4 sheet and about 3 inches high.

you also get a simple on/off dial on a much longer wire which you can site wherever you fancy , or not, you don’t have to plug that one in.

edited to add that you can change settings and start and stop the shower in the Mira app, if that sort of thing grabs you.

we have the shower mixer for two shower heads and the bath filler mixer.

grandschemeofthings · 02/09/2026 09:28

We have digital Aqualisa showers. You can either have a remote which can be wall mounted if you prefer, or a fixed controller (which needs wiring in).
Concealed or exposed (we have both, one in each bathroom). Also links to an app so you can turn it on there if you prefer. We don't have fixed/waterfall shower heads in either because I hate them but you can have any combo you like.

Thanks all. After a bit of late night searching I found out what I needed to be looking for and have found this along with an Aqualisa one and a Mira one. Not sure which make is best but have sent the links to the contractor so will see what he says.

I would rather it be a simple and low tech a shower as possible, with safety features to prevent scalding or freezing and to work on low pressure which these ones seem to do.

Funnily enough, during my Google search last night a post you posted back in 2014 I think it was came up @minipie asking about showers. I agree, a hose going across the corner would look messy which is why I didn't want that, but couldn't think what to search for. Anyway, all good now, I feel I am on tne right track.

Be careful with QS supplies, I ordered various items that were listed as 'in stock' and available for next day/2-3 day delivery.
One was discontinued and they couldn't get, 2 had 10-14 day lead times and another 3 month lead time.

Then they argued about me wanting to cancel my order. Very poor service and 'false selling' in terms of their statements re stock.

longtompot · 02/09/2026 12:45

@Tortephant thank you for the heads up on them. I will look elsewhere if we go for that one

I’ve never been comfortable with moving parts that will likely wear over time being buried behind tiles, wall or plasterboard, so for us having the mixing done in a box in the loft and the controls only having a wire back to the box was the answer to that but your house, your rules.

longtompot · 02/09/2026 15:08

@tanstaafl fair enough. We have had the same set up in our family bathroom, which was put in by the previous previous owner and has probably been there since mid 80s and has had no issues, so I think it will be ok. The firm who are doing the plumbing we have used just recently and their work was excellent, so I have faith in that aspect. The sole reason for having it set up this was as it's for our disabled dd so she can switch on the shower without being in it as she wouldn't be able to move quick enough if it was too hot or cold.

We have a shower in our en suite, it’s against the wall between the en-suite and the master bedroom and it has dual controls - both the shower panel itself AND a control panel on the wall in the bedroom. The control unit is actually in the attic above the en-suite.

Its unusual but thought I’d mention in case it helps!

longtompot · 02/09/2026 15:35

@OfficiallyOnVacation this shower room is on the ground floor so it would be quite a bit of work getting that bit into the attic I imagine

We have a Hansgrohe mixer unit where you can chose outlets (a fixed rainfall head and a head on a riser in our case). You take the front off the unit to get to all the components so you don't have the problem mentioned above. The controls are on the side wall, the outlets on the end wall.
