Replacement boiler

MBJ15 · 26/08/2026 15:46

Has anyone recently replaced their old system (boiler in kitchen and hot water tank in bathroom) and used either British Gas or Boxt?

the house we are purchasing has an old system that we want to switch to combi, free up bathroom space and keep the boiler where it is.

Ive booked at both BG and Boxt, both similar quotes, but I wondered how close those quotes come in at? I.e should I expect them to turn up and add a few £k?

it’s a 90s house and other than removing the tank, we are happy with positioning etc

also looking to take advantage of the 0% finance option, as we need a new bathroom too.

if anyone has recent experience I would be interested to hear it!

thanks

Just replacing 1982 boiler in kitchen and gravity header water tank in bathroom this week.

new water tank in bathroom and oil/HVO boiler in kitchen. Chose a saphire via an independent installer for two reasons, 1st 25year warranty where most are 5-10, and 2nd option to switch to HVO with no extra work anytime the price comes down giving us a stainable alternative fuel.

ours very accurate quote but appreciate it’s neither of the big brands you mention.

I used Boxt. British Gas were nearly double the price. It turned out i had a gas leak and Boxt had to pipe a new line in but i wasn’t charged anything extra. I took lots of photos for their survey but was let down by them as it turned out I had a water tank in the loft no one knew anything about that was still supplying water. When i had the bathroom changed a few weeks later the installer couldn’t turn off the water and had to call in someone to resolve it as Boxt washed their hands if it saying that i had simply asked for a boiler swap over (which was true) but my point is that if you don’t know about issues, you don’t know that you need them resolved! So in that respect, a physical visit to provide a quote would have been better. Overall, no issues with the service and i was able to use the 0% offer. Have recommended them previously and would again.

I’ll be honest, I had to go away and look this up! So if anything I’ve learned something new!

I’m pretty sure we have one in the loft as there’s an overflow pipe that comes out.

thank you for the reply!

There you go! You’re one step ahead of me! Just make sure you tell them and don’t just get like for like.
it’s definitely a good company and so good for people that can’t afford the options in cash.

I wouldn't usd BG, heard some horror stories about their boiler installations. No idea about Boxt.
We got 3 local installers to quote, so a gas registered plumber comes to look at the job, not a sales rep or a telephone quote. We chose one based on our gut feeling of his report of what the job entailed. He wasn't the cheapest of the three but when youre talking to the actual installer you get a feel for the one you can trust, their knowledge shows. Haven't been disappointed.

tanstaafl · 27/08/2026 08:28

we went on the gas safe website and found locally registered installers then asked them for quotes. We had a near 30 year old Ideal boiler which we only replaced because the engineers ( actually BG engineers under a Homecare boiler contract ) said there were parts that were now unavailable. We replaced it with an Ideal Combi.

local installer was at least £1000 cheaper than BG. 12 year warranty with the Ideal boiler and comes with a magnetic cleaner. They have to do a system flush before fitting the new boiler so don’t be paying extra for that.

we have a different gas safe engineer doing the yearly service ( to stay in warranty ).

I had 3 quotes, one from BG and two locals.

The locals were cheaper, but missed some stuff that the BG guy identified. One of the locals told me I needed to upgrade the diameter of the pipe, which was a load of rubbish and would have added significant extra expense.

The BG installation was very slick with the way they handled it all, finished the installation properly and got rid of the waste. They were much more hot on some of the regulatory issues than the locals. And helped optimise the system rather than just soldering up the new one in place and then getting out of there ASAP.

I think if I needed it replacing again, I might go for a local, but that's because the replacement would be simpler (no movement of position) and I am much more aware of the installation regulations and boiler issues than I was before.

I doubt whether Boxt are much different from BG.

There are reasons why locals are cheaper. Largely you get what you pay for.

I forgot to say Boxt were next day installation if ordered before 3pm. I think BG had a long wait.

It’s a good time to upgrade any radiators too OP, add TRVs , switch to Google Nest , BG’s Hive or other similar brands.

SleepingisanArt · 27/08/2026 19:23

Used BG to do this in my parents house before it was sold (the boiler died completely). The quotes were all similar but BG were able to do the work sooner. There was a problem on the day as the boiler wouldn't stay lit and after several hours the installer was really confused as everything he and his boss tried didn't solve it. It was 8pm by the time they left. 7am the next morning an engineer arrived and immediately spotted the problem and sorted it. He also changed a very old thermostat to a fancy new one, replaced the controller (and set it to come on and go off) and replaced a switch without charging extra. I felt they did a great job, went above and beyond and sent me flowers because it hadn't gone as smoothly as they planned.

Reviewing the house tomorrow, so I’ll check the rads! I recall some had been recent updates, but will double check!

That is above and beyond!! Fair play to them. Thank you for the feedback too

We used BOXT, great price and quick installation.
Easy to book a service online with them too if you take their service plan.
