Best thing to remove/cover water stain on ceiling?

My boiler leaked and the water has left a brown stain on the ceiling. The heating engineer said you can get stain remover for it. Any advice as to what to use. The ceiling is already painted white.

I’ve done a lot of redecoration lately, in an old house that has had various stains from old leaks etc. I’ve learnt the hard way that the only product worth buying to cover a stain (and then obviously repainting over the top afterwards) is Zinsser Cover Stain. It’s solvent based whereas a lot of other brands are water based and just don’t do the job. They look like they do for a while, but the stain will come back through after a while. Make sure the area is thoroughly dried out before you do it though - and this can take way longer than you might think.

We had this after a roof leak. Painted over it several times and it kept coming back through.

Even got another Roof company out because we thought it wasn’t fully fixed, the roof was fine but apparently stains can still show through years after the damp has been fixed.

He advised painting over the stains with a moisture sealant paint and after go over with normal white paint, it worked for us, the stain never came back.

Can. recommend Zinsser bin or cover stain

Zinsser. Just had a massive reno done with excellent builders and they only use Zinsser for this sort of stuff.

Yeah, you need a zinsser paint. I have done okay with Zinsser 123 rather than cover stain.

Great I’ll give it several
weeks to dry out fully. Then get some zinesser. The boiler is fixed and I threw away the carpet in the airing cupboard so the floorboards dry out properly.
