Wool rug in thoroughfare living room?

We live in an old house will no hall so you have to go through the living room to get to the kitchen. People have to pass between the sofa and the fireplace to get through.

I really want to put down a rug on the wooden floor but a huge Persian is out of budget so we were looking at wool rugs instead but I'm worried it will get ruined. I have my heart set on this pebble one from Dunelm but I've never had a rug like it before and I don't know if it will work. Is this a terrible idea? Any other suggestions?

I'm not keen I'm afraid.
It looks like a trip hazard and with a lot of traffic it could curl up at the ends.

Something flatter and heavier would be better IMO
