Dining room wallpaper

I'd chosen the Meadow Starling (3rd picture) some time ago but not progressed.
Just looking again, and saw the Monkey blue (1st picture) which wouldn't be my usual choice (majority of house painted in relatively neutral lightish colours - sage green, v pale mauve, white) but just caught my eye.
They also have Monkey gold (2nd picture).

I've used AI to generate the room views and now think my original choice (3rd view) is too much of the same colour, as is 2nd view.

4th picture is a slightly different room view and without the tablecloth (which was temporary but there when I took the pictures).

I REALLY like the blue, do you think it needs new curtains or does it look okay with the existing gold?
I'd match the wall light colours to the dark blue in the paper, not the colour the AI has.

And having seen the pictures I definitely need to try and find another home for the freezer.

The gold curtains look good with the monkey blue. Are you having wallpaper on all 4 walls? Just wonder if it might be a bit dark.

mondaytosunday · 07/08/2026 09:30

If you mostly use the dining room at night then I think the blue is an exciting choice. It might be a bit dark for breakfast, so friends how you use it. Curtains look fine.

Chasingsquirrels · 07/08/2026 09:59

Thanks both 😊.

Yes, wallpaper on all 4 walls.

Good to get views on curtains as I like them and they are good condition.

Mainly an evening meal and cards/games room. It is south westfacing so keeps the light in summer evenings, but is quite dark in the mornings.
We have a conservatory off the kitchen with a table & chairs which is mainly used for meals during late spring/summer/early autumn , although when it is very hot or cold it gets closed off and we use the dining room.

It is currently a deepish red, as attached just taken with & without lights (not repainted since we moved in 25 years ago - ekk), so quite dark already and I do like it.

I'm excited about doing it now, just need to translate that into action!

I LOVE the gold. 💛 The blue is lovely too, but if it was me I'd have the gold. You could have a lovely blue or green table cloth with a bit of gold or yellow in it to reverse the colours and tone down the 'too much gold' look. And/or (funds permitting!) pale green velvet curtains. 💚

I chose the last one with the smallest pattern. I think your room is too small for large prints.

LibertyLily · 07/08/2026 13:56

Monkey Blue. I love a deep colour in a dining room (ours is semi open plan to the kitchen and both are Edward Bulmer Pompadour) and so pleased you're being brave by having it on all the walls!

I disagree with the previous poster who said your room is too small for large patterns - in interior design circles large patterns (or tiles etc) are said to make smaller spaces appear larger and that's the rule we've always followed.

NoodleNuts · 07/08/2026 15:28

My preferences in this order: monkey blue, monkey gold, meadow starling (I don't like this one!)

orangehandles · 07/08/2026 15:33

Not sure I like the last one, it has a hint of nicotine stain about it.

dairydebris · 07/08/2026 15:35

I think you need to paint the ceiling too, if you use monkey blue. The white looks too stark against the colour of the wallpaper. I'd go for a mid blue, not bright.

rwalker · 07/08/2026 15:38

The first blue one seems to slightly clash with chairs
like 2nd

minipie · 07/08/2026 15:43

Oh I really love the red!! Just needs a bit of pattern injecting, maybe a washable rug with red in it, or a tablecloth.

Sorry not what you asked! Of the wallpapers I think I prefer the gold with blue monkeys. The dark blue is nice but it would definitely put you off using that room in the day - we have a similar colour room and it’s become an evening only room. The meadow is just meh.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 07/08/2026 15:43

I love the first pic with the bold colour. It’s memorable and makes an impact.

Chasingsquirrels · 07/08/2026 18:42

Thanks everyone.

I've never thought of it as a particularly small room, but I do think the table is too big for the room - my ex wanted a big table, I've kept it because it wasn't cheap (I know, sunk cost fallacy), I like the wood and have a sideboard in the same wood.
I've just measured the room and it is 10f x 11f or 3m x 3.3m.

I've contacted a couple of decorators for quotes and showed DP when he came home from work (my house so my choice but value his opinion) and he prefers the blue as well.

I'm not a fan of feature walls so didn't consider not doing the whole room.

I prefer the white ceiling (just tried an AI with pale blue to match the palest blue in the wallpaper and don't like that at all).

I've also realised that the pattern will actually be more busy than the initial pictures as AI has taken the swatch and blown it up rather than repeating. These new pictures are using the larger picture from the website.

This made me laugh!

I really like the red as well, and did look to match the paint, but after 25 years I've decided a change is due!

The blue ceiling with the darker paper is gorgeous too.

Seaside3 · 07/08/2026 21:55

Monkey blue is definitely the best.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 07/08/2026 22:05

Monkey blue. A dark dining room is lovely. Keep the white ceiling though. It looks as though there are tiny bits of white in the leaves of the Monkey Blue so a white ceiling is fine.

Kissesandcakes23 · 09/08/2026 18:48

Big patterns make small rooms look bigger. Monkey blue is a clear winner- paint ceiling either the mid blue or green in wallpaper and add a dining cloth in a stripe to add some subtle interest (thin stripe). People make mistakes by adding a bold beautiful wallpaper then going plain on everything else. A bold pattern needs others to bounce off. Think cushions- a big print, solid and small print/stripe is perfect
