Has anyone converted a detached garage into a self-contained studio?

And if so, when did you get it done and what did it cost? We’re considering this with a 6.3 X 3.2 metre detached garage to turn it into a compact space with a sleeping area, shower room and kitchen area. Maine electricity and water already connected.

You may need to apply for planning permission, not all councils allow detached garages to be converted.

You should think about insulation, fire regs, permissible doors and windows etc.

@PragmaticIshpp already in place from previous owner - we would just need to commence the work within the next 15 months.
Has anyone who’s done this got advice about costs? And any tips?

We would also like to do this. We have a double detached garage with a massive steep roof. However my friend when viewing houses was put off by the fact you needed to pay council tax on any annex with bathroom and it put me off.

I used to rent a studio that was a converted part of a house & if you’re planning to rent this out - prioritise soundproofing.

I could hear every word the family on the other side of the wall (landlords) said.

Can't you get some builders round to give you quotes? Or even just talk to a few on the phone? They wouldn't give you an exact quote but could probably say if you are looking at £5,000, £20,000 or £100,000.

What are the foundations, are the walls single skin, does it have a dpc? If it's anything like my garage you'd have to knock it down and start again.

@putupwhateverI think council tax would be payable as I assume it would be classified as a separate dwelling because it’s detached.

Will get some quotes from local builders; I’m just interested at the moment in people’s experiences if they’ve done this.

Edited

Sorry, missed the bit about it being detached.
