Is Launceston nice?

Is Launceston nice? Looking at houses around there and they seem reasonably priced for near the coast, I don’t know the area well. Is it a nice place to live? Good amenities etc? The in laws are looking for a location for a holiday home but spend at least half the year in their current one so basically more of a home.

We have friends who live there and they like it and it has always seemed very nice when we visit them.

It certainly does not seem as run down and depressed as some Cornish towns I could name.

I was at school there.. and lived a few miles away. depends what you are looking for. It’s rural.

wanting Some peace and quiet but with a town to do a bit of shopping, maybe a cafe or two, nice walks but not totally cut off, is winter worse due to the roads? Or summer with tourists?

I don’t think the public transport is great. You’ll have to drive everywhere. I’m from there.. now living in London with 2 teenagers. Would definitely not go back but enjoy visiting.

It’s nice yes, but it’s not really on the coast, quite central between north and south coast. Nothing to do there but it’s Cornwall so with a car you’d be alright.

I live quite close and really like the town, I know lots of people who were born and brought up and still live there, and this is reflected in the feel of the town.

There is a huge amount of new house building going on there though, and my main concern would be that the population will soon be more than the facilities and infrastructure of the town can comfortably cope with.

Seconding @TonTonMacoute's reservations. I live nearby and do my food shopping there often, between Warren's Butcher, M&S, Lidl and Tesco -- all within a mile.

I like the main old town, too, although like everywhere the shopping is struggling a bit, and Tavistock is much better for clothes.

It is just the tracts of new build houses that put me off.
