Would you replace the radiator with a vertical one? (spare bedroom)

Hi everyone.
We are redoing the flooring and painting in our spare bedroom and were are hesitating about potentially replacing our radiator.
Currently there's a horizontal radiator (same as the one on the photo) behind our futon sofa bed and we were wondering if replacing it with a vertical radiator (in white and maybe 30cm wide to maximise floor space) that we would put between the windows would look ok? We'd have the desk on the left, and then the sofa bed on the right and the radiator being in the middle.
Right now the radiator being behind the futon isn't really ideal as we are leaving about 10-15cm gap an not sure if because of that the heat is a bit restricted? Also if we open it to a bed, the radaitor would be jut where guests's heas would be sleeping.
What do you think?
And would a vertical radiator there look a bit weird, especially is quite narrow?

I would definitely replace with a vertical. It will free up wall space behind the bed and will look nice too.

Looking at the floor plan, I’d say that putting a verticle between the windows will dominate, it’s the thing your eye will be drawn to every time you enter the room. So no, I would not do that

Yeah the more I think about it the more I think you are right. Maybe we will keep the radiator where it is. Do you think having the sofa bed in front of it (and leaving maybe 10cm) gap won't really block the heat?

Can you switch the room round so the desk is in front of the radiator rather than the bed? I wouldn't want a vertical radiator.

Could you put a radiator on the wall to the left of the desk? Either a vertical or horizontal one. It would make it nicer when you are working at the desk.

I think a vertical one between the windows would work too.

I have read that you are supposed to have at least 30cm between a radiator and piece of furniture.

Vertical one between the windows but painted / colour-matched to the walls so it doesn’t ‘pop’ so much?

I’m not a fan of the vertical style radiators at all but what about a “traditional” style radiator? They can be a thing of beauty.

I’d have the vertical one but in white or another colour to match the room. I had one installed in my kitchen when it was refitted and I love it.

Vertical radiators= bathroom radiators. That’s how I see it. If floorspace is an issue- get underfloor heating.

You dont need a verticle radiator. The current one is a single radiator but if you swap it for a double it will be half the width and have the same heat output. Then you can fit in in between the windows

The only downside would be making sure that whatever you use for curtains doesn’t spend a long time up against a hot radiator. If I could keep the curtains neat and away from it then yes definitely the vertical would work for me.

Vertical radiators are largely used where people want to increase the thermal output (usually because of low flow temperatures from heat pumps) but don't have the wall space to fit a conventional radiator.

Interesting that it now seems like they are becoming a fashion trend.

Where would the new vertical radiator pipework go, underfloor? I think vertical rads that look like an 'attractive piece of sculpture' can work. There's no way ordinary white rads are attractive. You can get K3 rads that are three panel deep, so would be narrower but deeper (and heavier).

Once upon a long time ago maybe, but they are very designer/fashionable these days in a variety of designs/colours.

@Jenhouse a coloured one between the windows would be fine. Either the sand as the walks to blend or a colour to make a statement

if I was putting in new radiators now I'd put verticals, horizontal just feels so dated now. Or I'd go for the very old style ones which look quite cool.

EDIT: re looking at your photos I would definitely go for an old style radiator between the windows

I know I've read that as well. Thats why we were thinking of a vertical radiator at first

I know a lot of people that have sofa literally 3-4cm from radiator and say it's fine and been fine for 20-30 years so hard to know how much you should really leave

I don't think it's much of a 'risk' but it certainly reduces the heat you get into the room when it's absorbed by the furniture

I hadn't actually thought about this and it's a great idea. Just had a look and I can get a 60x60cm horizontal one that has a high enough btu and could put it behind the windows then.
