Options for external shading on outward-opening upstairs windows

Does anyone have external shading for upstairs windows that open outwards? Brise soleil or shutters or anything along those lines? Our upstairs gets ridiculously hot and I'm looking at options.

Or is there anything we can do internally to help? Already have blackout blinds or curtains we shut to block the sun but it's not making much difference.

Short term, shut a sheet or old curtains in them on the outside. It works wonders

BBC recommends leaving the loft hatch open so that the hot air rises up to there.

The loft hatch definitely helps, per a pp. The advice seems to be to keep windows, curtains and blinds closed all day then open them at night to get a colder breeze through.

I didn't even look at the orientation of our house before we bought it. 1 of the 2 most important bedrooms is South facing. D'oh. Ofc it's now like an incinerator, despite being 150 years old.

I think I'm also going to take the carpet up and see if bare floorboards make a difference. And get the OH to turn his massive TV off standby during the day.

"And get the OH to turn his massive TV off standby during the day."

Unfortunately, unless he has some ancient (e.g. CRT) tv, its unlikely to make a noticeable difference; modern lcd tvs give off v little heat, on standby it'd be around 3 watts.
He and any kids are probably heating up tthe room more - perhaps pop him in the chest freezer for 5 mins each hour🤔😉

We have wide slatted Venetian blinds on the inside of our windows, when tilted upwards they stop the radiant heat from the sun.

Yes this will work wonders. I clipped a couple of bedsheets across the front of our large patio doors today and the difference was about 4 degrees!
