Edinburgh- best places to live for a Londoner and young family

I am London born and bred and have finally been convinced to move with hubby's job to Edinburgh. I love it as a visitor but am nervous about moving so far away from family and friends. We have 2 boys, 3 and 1.
So, what are best city centre areas to live in ? Where should you live to be near the best nurseries and schools (private or state)?
Am I totally mad or will I fall in love with the place ? Any other tips gratefully received. We will be renting at first.

Wear a Hibs jersey in there.

That'll raise eyebrows .

Perhaos we can get Greggs sponsorship - collect our badges from Greggs in Stockbridge then stroll around the Botanics colecting friends and saving the Hibs jersey wearings from certain stoning by the ladies that lunch!

'Where is nailpolish? She is the Edinburgh tzarina I think.'

That's what I'm saying! I was wondering where she was way down the thread.

How can she miss this one?

She's lived in pretty much every area over time.

You ladies can all apply fake tattoos to your forearms or calves.

Big ones. Something like, say, a Playboy bunny with 'Sexy' written below it and all meet up in front of Inverleith House, pretending to smoke cigarettes .

meep, thank you - will have a nosey.
When i come up can we all meet at the Botanical Gardens. I am for the orange fruit shoot idea.

ok pruners we're on. BTW, a bottle of full fat coke ( 500ml) with a straw is quite effective as well ! Deep fried mars bar in other hand of course.

Morning Mousemole. I just remembered that I know a really good relocation lady in Edinburgh called Liz. She is lovely and friendly and knows Edinburgh (houses/schools etc) really well so you would be in safe hands.

Good luck with the search!

hey meep, that's really kind. Thank you. I will let you know how we get on.

Hi there,

I currently rent in Edinburgh but am looking to buy. I've always rented in Stockbridge/New Town but can no way afford to buy there. I'm looking into Newhaven. It'd be nice to be near the water. What do people think of this area? Is there much trouble? Many Neds? Much crime? Any thoughts/opinions would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,
Chris
