Does anyone have a recommendation for an independent kitchen designer to help me plan a new kitchen? I have zero idea what I want and no idea where to start!!

If you go to Wren kitchens they will start by sending out a surveyor, then you will have a couple or three meetings with a designer, he will be guided by you, your budget and the bits in the kitchen that are important to you, it will all be do on a 3D cad program, these are quite realistic and will give you a good idea of the final layout. They are reasonably priced and the quality is perfectly serviceable. Just don't have them fit it they will charge a fortune. There are plenty of local trade / kitchen installers on facebook or check-a-trade.

I'm seconding Wren Kitchens, they'll take everything you wish under consideration and give you several plans and examples of how everything could look. If you already have a rough idea of what you'd like to do, you can use a 3d kitchen planner yourself and then seek local designers that would help you work with it further.
