How does broadband setup usually work when moving house?

Apologies for a stupid question but how does internet provision work with moving house. For water and electricity etc you surely themnthe day you lived in- there’s no loss of service. Is it the same for broadband or do you have to get them to come and set you up?

The previous owners will have to take their router box with them when they vacate and either use the same supplier at their new address or return it. You will have to find a provider that's good in your area etc and contact them before you move. You can then arrange an installation date. I stupidly forgot to do this and had to wait 10 days before having the internet - horror!
If you're going to use the same internet supplier as you are now, you may be able to just plug in the router. Best to ring and check.

I moved in Feb. I alerted my then provider Virgin Media via their app that I was moving and they set up an engineer visit for Day 3 in the new house and a prior visit to the street by the tech team. Hours of what’s app comms followed on day 3. They wanted to dig up bits of my garden recently hard landscaped. It didn’t go well. They still haven’t refunded me what they owed me. I am now using the same provider the previous owners used as it meant no further drilling into walls.
I would certainly alert your current provider four weeks before you shift but also have a plan B.
And make sure your phone contract has loads of data in case you need to tether.

We arranged everything in advance and the installations (moved twice) took place as scheduled.
If the installation had been delayed, our BB supplier would have sent us a Mobile BB router FOC.

A fried ended up having a Mobile BB router and said it was brilliant with better service than they had at their previous house.
