How do you put a shower curtain on the rod?

Sorry about the stupid question, I'm sure other people know this stuff. There's a shower curtain rod in the bathroom (tension rod I think) and I want to put a curtain on it. I went and bought one and put the hooks into it but how do I hang the hooks onto the rod now? I've wasted time watching so many videos but everything's about how to install a tension rod. I have no problem with that because the house came with a rod in it. I just want to know how to bloody put the curtain on. In the installation videos they show there are two "ends" on the pole, which I can see stuck to the wall, so even if I manage to get the pole off the wall (please help with that) how could I get the hooks past it?

Twist it to make it smaller, it'll come off the wall.
Then either remove the end or twist the other way so the two poles come apart.
If you've got the kind of bendy hooks with a gap in them just pop them straight on, no need to remove it.

If it’s a tension rod, there will be a spring inside. Grab one end and pull back away from the wall. It should all come free. Thread the curtain on. Put one end back in the ‘holder’ then offer the other end up, pull back ready to slot back into the other holder.

(Oooh my dad would be proud of me saying ‘offer up’ 😆)

If that doesn’t make sense - please can we have a pic of curtain hooks and rod arrangement?

I don't understand that. This is like that time I tried to learn crochet. Twist what way? Wish I knew about bendy hooks before I bought this.

I will take a photo now.

There's a fat side and a thin side.

If you can see a line in it where it joins then put one hand either side. Twist your left hand towards you and your right hand away from you. That should reduce the length meaning it comes away from the walls.

This is the curtain.

The rod gets smaller. It’s on a spring. Put your hands on the ends and pull them towards the middle so it gets small enough to slip off the wall

Summersongroses · 09/05/2026 18:23

It’s annoying as hell but if you get the middle bit where the thin meets the bigger bit it should gently unscrew and then to put it back up you twist it to get the tension back. Usually it’s twist right to tighten and twist left to loosen. Good luck.

Dizzydrizzy · 09/05/2026 18:24

Ignore me. The hooks are the ones you just open enough to get over the rail. So just do that!

Ahhhhhbisto · 09/05/2026 18:24

The white hook on that shower curtain will slot onto the pole. You do not need to move the pole.

rainbowunicorn · 09/05/2026 18:26

There's a gap on the hooks in your picture. Just push against the pole and the will go over.

Seconded. Ignore what I said about twisting above! Those hooks are bendy so you just pull each one slightly apart and pop it round the pole.

fellupthestairs · 09/05/2026 18:26

You just pull your hooks apart a bit and hook them over the pole, you don’t need to take the pole down

Oh my goodness, I'm such a fool. I didn't know it can pull apart so much to go over the rod. Just learning to do everything at 50+ after divorce. Thank you for your help everyone, shower curtain is on! 👏

Well done @nowtrightnot a fool at all, none of us just magically know stuff until we ask!

DeathBanana · 09/05/2026 19:40

Also don’t be sad about shower curtains (if you were!). I’m team shower curtain allllll the way. Chuck in the wash. No squeegying, no limescale, no manky seals.

Also, when you’re ready to fully embrace the curtain side you can use a polyester inner (plain basic shower curtain) and have any thin ish beautiful fabric as the outer (dangles outside the bath).
