Extension inspiration or ideas

We're looking to extend to the side - replacing and enlarging an existing single skin structure - and also to the rear.

However because of the footprint of our plot we can't just do a wraparound extension. What I'm trying to work out is whether it's feasible to do anything where both extensions are linked or whether to just treat them entirely separately.

Very poor diagram to explain. Light blue is existing, dark blue is proposed, red is boundary.

I've trawled rightmove photos to see if I can find examples of what might be feasible but have mostly drawn a blank.

How is the space currently used and how do you envision it being used afterwards?

DancingNotDrowning · 03/05/2026 08:19

it depends on what you want to use the space for but it looks like you could defined wrap around with an angled walk way of some type - I have seen that done previously to great effect.

otherwise there’s no issue with having two separate extensions

Go onto Gemini google and play around with it on ai

I don’t know, but I’d fire your architect.

Try Don’t Move Improve website for inspiration.

The side extension would house a utility area at the front which is where it connects to the kitchen. Ideally I'd like to have the rear of that space as a home office but I think that only works if it can be joined at the back to the rear extension which would just be an additional lounge (our existing lounge is very small)

If anyone has any examples of an angled extension that would be great as I just cannot picture how it would work.

I must add, we're not looking for grand designs sorts of ideas, our house is worth less than 200k

From a start like that you can just keeping asking it to change measurements or add photos etc

That's just two entirely separate extensions, which I know is feasible.

I'm really looking for real life examples of something similar (if it exists)

I know when I was doing our bathroom, DIY forums and Rightmove were far more helpful for inspiration than bathroom showrooms or magazines as they rarely display a 2x2.5m space

You might already have looked here, but I’ve always found Houzz really helpful when planning extensions and renovations. The architects on here do some ingenious things. Here’s one example of an angled extension on there https://www.houzz.co.uk/magazine/room-of-the-week-a-clever-angled-extension-on-a-georgian-terrace-stsetivw-vs~68389661

What’s your budget OP. If the house is currently valued at less than 200k I’m not sure 1 let alone 2 extensions is either affordable or viable for the return

Unalakleet · 03/05/2026 09:56

Not looking to add value or expecting a return on investment. Just want something that will work for us. We can budget up to 100k.

Our existing house has a lot going for it, to get what we want in another house we'd be looking at something around 400k
