Baffled by gunk (following fitting of artificial grass)

We had artificial grass placed out the front of our house last week. We have a very small piece of land with two outdoor pipes. We woke up this morning to this (see photos). It looks like someone's thrown wood down the pipe but what on earth is all this gunk? It's definitely not toilet paper or sewage as it has no smell. Has anyone experienced this or seen anything like this? I am baffled.

Have you had your gutters cleaned? What's the weather been like? Did it rain or no rain and gunk still appeared. No pic yet but no idea really.

InLoveWithAI · 23/04/2026 11:00

It certainly looks like toilet paper

IHateEmptyPockets · 23/04/2026 11:06

Animals? Did you take the plastic cap off the hole
or was it like that when you went outside? It almost looks like loft insulation!

Definitely not toilet paper (thank goodness)!

What's going on under the manhole covers?

FeralWoman · 23/04/2026 11:24

Get a plumber.

What's going on under the manhole covers?

Yeah - I would definately be lifting that man hole cover - just rule out no blockages!

CultOfTheAirFryer · 23/04/2026 13:58

Looks like toilet paper. Is next to a manhole cover. Doesn’t seem like much of a mystery…

Why not lift the manhole cover to check?

BreadInCaptivity · 23/04/2026 14:02

Looks like it’s coming from the manhole - you’ve likely got a blockage that needs to be dealt with.

Backtosugar · 23/04/2026 16:49

Looks like toilet paper to me too!

Easylifeornot · 23/04/2026 17:19

Looks like the gunk you get around the dishwasher filter bit obviously in much smaller quanities. Look in the man hole.

CoastalCalm · 23/04/2026 17:22

I think the drain has backed up and flooded and left behind the kind of gunk that comes from dishwasher / dryer lint etc

TheLandlordsAreFrowning · 23/04/2026 17:28

Did you have normal grass there before? The drain might have been backed up for a while and the soil was absorbing the overflow. Now it is more noticeable because the plastic is less absorbant?

notnowmaud · 23/04/2026 18:21

Weird shit

augustusglupe · 24/04/2026 00:18

We had something similar recently and it was toilet paper. Got the drain men in and they did a good blast, were here a good few hours and sorted the problem. Looks like a blockage.

nevernotmaybe · 24/04/2026 02:07

It looks identical to when our drainage blocked last year.

MinPinSins · 24/04/2026 13:09

Was there grass or soil before? If so, it was probably being absorbed, but putting a sheet of plastic down means it just sits on top. Definitely get the drain looked into!

AnOldCynic · 24/04/2026 19:08

I think the small round thing is the access cover to a rodding eye? You’ve had a blockage somewhere (possibly caused by the small pieces of timber?) and the backlog has pushed the cover up and off and yes, I think that is probably toilet paper and shit….

Whether the blockage was caused by the process of laying the astroturf it’s hard to tell without knowing exactly what the works were to lay it.
