Meter Readings

We moved into a house two years ago that has a smart meter. Never had any problems. This morning for the fourth time since we moved into we have had a guy call for meter readings. I’m not questioning that it’s genuine (same guy each time) but why we need meters read if we have a smart meter. Can’t remember anything other than very occasional visits in other houses that weren’t on smart meter. I don’t get it, am I missing something?

Do your bills show actual readings or are they estimates?

GreenGremlin · 02/03/2026 11:06

As the other poster said, the meters could have stopped sending reads. It's very common. I used to deal with complaints for an energy company. This could also happen if you changed supplier when you moved in.

Have just checked and they show actual readings from smart meter each month

My SM is not sending readings through (internal display is fine) so I am in the habit of submitting meter readings on the last day of the month.
Takes 2-minutes and saves any hassle of estimated bills.
Yes of course I could demand the SM is fixed but TBH it causes me no issues.

In that case I'd give your energy supplier a call.

No need to shout - I have asked them, thanks 😊 they didn’t know either.

We used to get this but before smart meters, the people who should come out to read them (as a check on your readings) didn't and tried to get you to do it for them. I always just said I'd do it online as usual. No idea why they would need to do this for a smart meter unless its not transmitting properly.

then this thread is pointless because the only people who can say why they phoned you are the people who phoned you.
if it disturbs you that much then write to customer services and see if they will give a more considered written response than someone you catch on the phone.

They’ve visited four times, not phoned.

I’ve already spoken to them. I was asking if anyone else had had repeated visits.

If it’s not of interest, feel free to scroll on.

Perhaps they think you have a dishonest face, and are checking in case your meters have been fiddled.

I got a couple of visits after improving my heating system and knocking a third off the annual usage.

And this is why hell will freeze over before I ever EVER have a smart meter. Useless lumps of pointless plastic and metal tat they are. One of the most ridiculous things to ever be created.
