Anybody moving house in the next week or so?

How's the packing going?

We have professional packers coming later this week but i still feel completely overwhelmed. My house is such a mess!

Anybody want to share their house moving tips with me. Including on the day, food etc.

So far I have packed a few boxes myself, stuck post-its to furniture to direct to new room on arrival, printed off floorplans, made an "essentials box" and Im planning to pack overnight bags for us all. Plus ive done a grocery shop to arrive the next day.

anyone else?

Well done @StrawberryThief1930
You must be so relieved.
Three weeks in here.
in no particular order:
-agree a safe place for odd screws, keys, bits fallen off and dutifully put these oddities there for future repatriation
-Little knives with retractable razor blades are more useful than scissors
-Charge all the toothbrushes in advance
-remember to cater for the dog
-nail scissors
-Sharpie pens kept handy
-don’t lose your phone in new place as this wastes hours
-now is the time to start trialling Charlie Bingham - my removal men were v grateful as they’d driven 10 hrs and it was a treat
-Get your removal team to put felt pads on the feet of the sofa, dining table etc as soon as they bring inside. Means it’s easier for you to slide into a new position
-know where to find batteries and lightbulbs
-voice notes all the way
-change all your delivery addresses immediately ( I got five Amazon deliveries in two days before my sellers realised)
-change your address on your bank current account immediately
-broadband transfer is a mare. Make sure you have masses of data on your phone contract. Where possible adopt the same supplier as the people exiting
-don’t play around with the boiler- go check for a QR code on a controller box in hall or kitchen

wow, lots of good stuff there. thank you! i need to order some felt feet - good reminder. and i like the idea of a specific spot for all the oddities/lost bits.

packers start today. im hoping they've overestimated the number of days required, i can't believe we have so much stuff. they have planned 2 days packing, 2 days loading and 1 day unloading!

We hope to move end of next month. Are you moving to a different area? I am hoping to find removal company who can pack van one day and unpack a day or so later as I suspect we may need to clean house and probably carpets before moving in.

When we moved we got this. It's been great! The hub sits in the spare room upstairs. It's been so much better than a wired in broadband.

we are only moving about 4 miles. but my uncle recently relocated and they loaded up the van and left it overnight and then moved in the next day so its definitely possible.

Ours packed us up 95% on the Thursday. Came back at 08.00 on the Friday for two beds. Our lorry (and its extension lorry) was parked at their HQ until 05.00 am Monday morning. They appeared on the Monday teatime after a 10 hr journey. We fed them and then they unpacked a few bits before coming back at 08.00am the next day. @VioletandPurpleFlower You may have to pay a day's van rental but as long as they have enough vehicles I'm sure they will offer. @StrawberryThief1930 Is it just two in your team? That might be why it's taking as many days. Now that they are going through your house today like locusts,😂 I bet you don't see these messages until about 10.00pm

StrawberryThief1930 · 26/02/2026 16:21

ha @Mum5net im back! they only stayed about an hour. packed 2 rooms. i don't think the house is as bad as they expected. they are coming again tomorrow afternoon. and Tuesday. and loading Wednesday.

only 2 blokes for the packing but i think more men will come for Completion.

feels very weird seeing 2 rooms basically empty with boxes piled up.

must order the felt feet! im doing it now because the new dining room has a parquet floor and i won't want to scratch it.

Go for the actual page of felt so you can cut to size as my feet feet that were pre-cut weren’t big enough for the sofas or the table

nannyallthetime · 26/02/2026 16:44

I ordered disposable cups for the removal men’s drinks so we didn’t have to unpack our mugs.
Bring a power pack already charged for mobiles.
lots of nice individually wrapped biscuits for removal team
Ask the men to put the beds together as you will be glad to have it done when you are exhausted
We kept the duvet covers on the duvets so they could go straight on the beds and the same with the pillows. They all went in laundry bags in our car
Make sure any medication is available along with plasters etc
ask the removal company do they have clothes rails you can borrow

Buscobel · 26/02/2026 17:17

The packers will probably have wardrobe boxes. We lived with them whilst we built proper wardrobes.

StrawberryThief1930 · 26/02/2026 21:17

yes the removers have wardrobe boxes so the clothes are sorted.

ill add a charger power bank to my bag - great idea. already got disposable cups and plates.

ive ordered a multipack of felt feet from amazon so hopefully have all the bits i need.

im enjoying all the tips - thank you.

It took us a full week to find a particular cafetière that should have been in the don’t lose box. When others pack - at the other end when you are unwrapping the parcels - it feels a cross between an endless game of ‘pass the parcel’ and Xmas day

Mum5net · 03/03/2026 15:14

How’s the packing @StrawberryThief1930 ?

StrawberryThief1930 · 03/03/2026 15:53

crazy. my house is a pile of boxes, they've brought nearly everything downstairs for easy loading. and have loaded up a ton of stuff into a van already. full steam ahead now.

its amazing how horrid the rooms look without all the decorative bits/kids toys etc. not homely at all.

all the boxes are making me feel like the unpacking will be a nightmare. their labelling isn't great "Room 2 - misc" argh!!!

OP posts:
VioletandPurpleFlower · 03/03/2026 16:21

I’m doing my own packing in the hope of being able to find everything when moved in. I am trying not to take anything we don’t need but have to admit to packing boxes labelled junk/misc.

Mum5net · 11/03/2026 14:09

How’s it going @StrawberryThief1930 and @VioletandPurpleFlower ?

StrawberryThief1930 · 11/03/2026 18:17

absolutely marvellous! we're in! i used lots of the tips on this group.

we had a few minor damages from the removers but not too bad.

I was very glad of my overnight box with a stash of emergency supplies eg paper plates, hairbrush, cleaning stuff, a sharp knife etc.

i never want to see a box labelled "misc" again!!

I am absolutely in love with our home. its a true dream forever home and ive spent most of the week hugging myself and in slight disbelief it's ours.

thanks for the tips and keeping me calm!
