I would call a good plumber to sort this out for me.

Same, the plumber will either repair or measure the distance between the pipes and where the shower head is fitted and try and find you a match that can be fitted with minimal damage to the tiles and pipe work.

You could try turning the water off, unscrewing & seeing whats happening inside - probably plastic innards which have lost their thread. Maybe very cheap to repair, or you could likely just replace like with like.

Sad to say, the bar showers are cheaper and not as long lasting as the round type.

Looking on the bright side, if it has been fitted with a support and connection bracket fixed to the wall under the tiles, you will find two largish chrome nuts behind the bar, which can be undone to remove it, and a new one screwed on.

The spacing of the pipes, and the nuts, are a standard size.

It is not usually worth trying to take them apart to repair.

If it has not been fitted with a bracket, and you have to break out tiles to get it off, ask for a bracket to be fitted when you change it. The bracket also supports it very firmly and prevents it coming loose in the wall.

This link shows how it works, they are not usually so expensive.

I had a similar issue whereby one side of the shower bar was stuck. There is usually a socket at the back to take out the handle. In my case some stopper in the mechanism came out and kept it lock. I pushed it back inside and it's working great since.

You need to get the knob off. There may be an end cap, or a small hex screw that holds the cap on. But it will be hidden under some bit of trim.

Loosen the screw and pull it off. It may be that the plastic grip has worn out on the end knob where it meets the metal of the filter inside. If so you can just glue it on or find some way of stopping it freely rotating.

If you have to replace the filter inside, then it is probably worth getting a new bar mixer unit fitted. youtube replacing a bar mixer shower.

I've managed to get it off and bought a new one that went straight on. thanks for all your advice.
