Anyone won a planning appeal?

We're about to appeal a refused planning application for a first floor extension.
Would be grateful for any tips on getting it through the appeal successfully.

That's very, very helpful. Thanks all of you.
I feel more confident about it now.
Mumsnet to the rescue once again.

Lyra - if you're still around then how did it go?

Hi There
we are about to compile our report for appeal submission and was hopeful on finding an example of a successful submission as a guide
can anyone help

I believe an appealing against a decision of a planning committee (councillors being generally lay people) that went against officers recommendations (experts) is far easier to be successful at then appealing against the decision of planners who start as experts in their own field.

Just thought it was an important point to make as in effect it's not appealing on the same playing field as you are asking about .... as often when councillors go against officers recommendations they then also go on to be unsuccessful in defending them in appeal when the professional opinion in the first instance was the development wasn't against planning policy

how we won: take photos of every extension similar to your own in the area with similar houses (we sent in 40 the DOE obviously thought it was hilarious & said "On yes lots of photos) when the officer comes round to check neither you nor the planning officer are suppose to comment - but the planning officer tried to & was shut down, we got through. take photos of front of house to show what it looks like & write out in detail why it wouldn't be detrimental to the street scene. & good luck! (side extension 2 story years ago)
