Asbestos garage roof needs replacing - need info before asking for quotes

Well, we just need it replacing as it pisses water through. Does anyone know anything about dealing with asbestos, will it be expensive ? I am expecting lots of raise eyebrows, sucking of teeth and 'you'll need the whole garage replacing', but would like to be able to discuss this armed with a bit of knowledge.

Dh took our roof down and our local tip will take asbestos from private residents not in business iyswim for free, that way we only paid for the roof to be redone.

I think it can be expensive for tradespeople to dispose of asbestos.
