Looking to do the hall, stairs and landing. Two big dogs who rub against paintwork. Which brand of paint has been best for you in hardwearing circumstances?

Johnstones scrubbale Matt (they can colour match) or little greene intelligent Matt emulsion.
little greene edges it but is pricier

Valspar paint is amazing, it cleans up wonderfully

i like Farrow & Ball Modern Emulsion. i have it in my utility room where the dogs live and it always wipes up clean and as new. it's amazing.

i tried Dulux diamond finish and found it far too matt and all the dirt and scratches just stuck to it.

I used a standard wickes one on a kitchen wall and that was fine. It was quite a bold colour, and my toddler drew on it, and that scrubbed off ok

The brand name is not the key though I favour Dulux Trade.

You can get acrylic "kitchen and bathroom" paint which is very durable. It is rather thick so prepare the surface well before you start and try to apply two thin coats. Bare plaster should be primed beforehand preferably with two thinned mist coats. Matt vinyl emulsion is fine for that.

A glossy finish is much easier to clean than a matt one and does not hold dirt so you will mostly be able to sponge it clean.

Unless you dogs are very tall, you can fit a dado rail and use your ordinary paint or paper above that,

Valspar Premium Matt goes on like a dream and is scrubbable.

Dulux trade diamond Matt. I get it from the Dulux trade centre. Pricy but it's truly scrubbable! Had the same issue with a dog and hall stairs. I wouldn't use anything else.

YY Dulux Trade Diamond Matt.

PigletJohn · 18/02/2026 17:41

Disheartened to see people thinking that matt is easy to keep clean 😕

Sorry @PigletJohn but I have learnt from experience that I can’t live with a shiny vinyl finish on interior walls. My whole house was painted in it when I moved in (the previous owners had three boxers) and it’s a very particular look. I’d much rather use a durable diamond Matt and in extremis retouch the very occasional mark or ding which can’t be scrubbed 🤷🏻‍♀️
