OK, so we're hopefully moving in a couple of weeks time, and we have a 7 month old baby. The new house has a deep blue carpet in the lounge/dining room (all one room - 22 feet long) and cream walls. The current owners have cream sofas in there and it looks lovely, but I dont want cream as our current sofa is cream and is a PITA to keep clean with a baby. I cant take current sofa as our current lounge is small but wide and we had a huge corner sofa which wont fit in new house. Anyway I am reluctant to change the carpet as although I wouldn't have picked blue, it is in good condition and silly to change when we're needing money and also with a small baby. So... we need to buy new sofas - what colour/texture would you go for? Thanks.

Leather, definitely, with a baby. Much easier to keep clean than fabric.

If you are keeping the carpet, I would get a black leather sofa.

I hope you have a good hoover as a carpet that colour will show every crumb/speck of fluff (used to have the same colour in my last house!)

I think black sofas on a dark blue carpet may make the room too drab and dark.

How about a sofa that has washable covers, from Ikea for example, so it can get trashed, then washed.

You can even buy a second set of covers for 'fancy'

I wouldn't go down the route of 'throws' for whatever sofa you get, you spend half your life tucking them in.

How about a golden, or reddish, brown leather?

I prefer brown and blue to black and blue, and its neutral so you could add other colours into the accessories to your taste...?

And agree re throws, far too much work!

Covers are ok, but v expensive - wish I'd got leather instead, tbh.

Leather sofas and blue carpet ?!?!?!? NO!!!!!!! A stone colour looks good with blue and cream.Ikea have a sofa called ektorp not too expensive and they do a lovely mink/stone colour

definitely leather if you have a baby.
I'd go for black and lots of colourfu l cushions and a nice throw cum blanket.

22ft makes it quite a large room, so don;t think blue carpet and black sofa would look too drab at all.

No to leather IMO and def NO to black leather, blue and black not a good combo at all.
Agree that taupe/stone would look stylish and is easy to keep clean. Get a sofa with loose covers you can remove and wash and ideally get two sets of covers so you have one you can use when the other is in the wash.

I'd rip up the horrible blue carpet, get the floorboards sanded and pick a nice sofa you like.
Ikea sofas look quite nice but IMO are far too shallow to be comfortable.

Pannacotta · 13/06/2008 23:06

Actually ripping up the carpet is a good idea, carpet in a dining room is v hard to keep clean.
Sanded floors much more practical with DCs and it's much easier to choose furnishings to go with wooden flooring than blue carpet.

Thanks for all your different suggestions! I guess when we move (hopefully next week!- fingers crossed) we will decide.
