Hi we need to pave/tarmac part of our front garden to the side of the existing driveway to park another car . Has anyone done this ? Did you tarmac or block pave part? Th car is electric so will be heavy but small . Any advice welcome thanks

We did ours to match the existing driveway, so block paved. A neighbour did it by putting a strip of tarmac at the side of the block paved drive - looks dreadful!

Please consider the environment and use gravel rather than tarmac or block paving. It looks nicer too.

Also consider rain water run off which is why being eco-friendly can be a win win

You don’t “need” to do this.

Please reconsider whether you can work with what you already have first. Councils really ought to stop people from doing this, it’s environmentally very irresponsible.

you can use things like grasscrete that give a hard surface for parking but also allow grass to grow and rainwater to drain. that is much more ecofriendly (and looks better) than solid paving.

If it's grass you'll have to dig quite deep then build up, if you want it be a long term solution, so factor in alot of manual labour and a couple skips. Assuming it's DIY

And drainage, what do you currently have for the other car?

Somersetbaker · 18/01/2026 16:08

Any surface you use has to be permeable, any run off has to be on to your own property not to a public drain. Do you need to extend the drop kerb?

Check whether you need planning permission. There are rules now as hard surfaces add to drainage issues.
