How much is a day rate carpenter?

whats a typical day rate for a carpenter chippy in your area?
we’re looking to lay engineered wooden planks in herringbone, they get laid with glue and click together. 70sqm in total.
the planks are 40cmx10cm in dimensions, so will be quite fiddly.
I’ve had quotes ranging from £40-£90 per square metre! That’s quite a difference!

We’ve also had quotes to work on a day rate
£200-£350 per day

We’re in SE and my mum recently had herringbone laid in her living room not sure what square footage it is but it’s a small 2bed semi so not a big area. I think she paid £500 for 2 days work. However, the carpenter has done quite a few jobs for my mum and I think this was reflected in the price. It was his first time laying herringbone and he said he would charge a hell of a lot more next time as it’s so fiddly! BIL is a carpenter too and his day rate is £250

Oh that’s great thanks.
day rate of £250 has been quoted so that’s about right for our area it seems.

That's all very well but ime day rates often string it out.

My DH is £500 plus but he is senior and works in the tv industry

I think you want a flooring fitter not a carpenter, and one that is expert in installing that type of flooring.

I think they normally charge about the cost of the flooring in sqm to fit, although if you want something fancy like herringbone they might charge more.

Anyway, 70 sqm is quite an area to fit, so whichever way you look at it its going to be pricey, and with the stuff being glued down (one shot) going for a cheap fitter might be something to regret in the future.

Just an update for anyone else who might be looking at the same thing….
our flooring cost £54 psm.
Engineer wood floor. Glue and click design.
herringbone pattern
fitting worked out £55 psm inc glue
we had lots of fiddly bits that needed a lot of attention - bay window, alcoves, island etc.

very happy with the result!

Ha ha, sorry I didn’t make it clear… it didn’t take one day… it took 2 people 6 days! So 12 working days in total.

70 square metres is almost an entire ground floor of a 4 bed house with extension. So quite a big space.

in one day they managed about 1/3 of a front room with bay window. Very fiddly indeed!
