Moving to Weston Super Mare - thoughts?

CelestialCandyfloss · 29/12/2025 21:30

Hello all!
Anyone here live in Weston Super Mare? I'm from Bristol, have lived in my flat in the suburbs in South Bristol for nearly 20 years. I work from home 3 days a week, 2 days in Bristol city centre. I'm a single parent to a 15 year old daughter and indoor cat.

I'm bored of living in the boring sticks outside Bristol!! After 20 years I need a change. I really like it in Weston, and after my daughter has finished her GCSEs I want to move. I would prefer to commute by train to work, so near to a station would be good. I would like 3 bedrooms ideally, a garden, and I'd love 2 bathrooms. Would be good for my daughter to be able to travel to college or VI Form - which are good?

If you live in Weston or surrounding area, what are your thoughts? Where is nice? What's the community like? I will probably have a budget of around £325k. Thanks!

I've always counted Weston super Mare as the sticks of Bristol anyway. Surely if you're South Bristol you can't be more than twenty mins from it anyway?

I currently live in South Bristol it takes me about an hour to get into the city on the bus because of traffic. I am thinking of moving to Weston?

It's an absolute shit hole. Went there recently for the first time in years. It was full of addicts. It looked like a zombie apocalypse.

That's weird because that's not my impression of it at all. I have been looking at the surrounding area as well. Where are you talking about? Do you live there?

What about moving to South Gloucester eg places like Cam ( train station) or Thornbury? Malmesbury could be nice. Is Bath affordable! ? Chippenham?

WSM struck me as windswept and a bit sad. Clevedon might be marginally better.

anonocakey · 29/12/2025 21:53

We visited the centre and sea front. Getting there was a nightmare, everywhere was being dug up and traffic diverted, which though impermanent didn't create an initial good impression. The shopping area was rough and down at heel with some really dodgy people. The highlight was the bloke bombed out of his brain dropping syringes out if his pocket in the middle of the high st at 3 pm on a Saturday.
Long term resident of the sw, not been to Weston for c twenty years and not now planning on returning any time soon.

I’ve been going to Weston since I was a child as my Granny lived there, right in the centre.

I now take my own children back there every year with my mother.

They redid the seafront a few years ago but it has got really tired. We went in August and although we all had a great time, it was the first time I really noticed how downhill it has got.

Tired, dirty, lots of rubbish. Groups of people just hanging around. Lots of homeless people (which is not me being snobby, it’s just sad).

It was just all so tired.

What I will say though, is that I’ve always found Weston safe. I feel safe there. I will always go back yearly but I don’t think I could live there.

I don't want to live right in the centre, as I would prefer a house as I've been in my flat for years. There are stations in Worle and Milton as well. I don't actually mind a tacky seafont lol. I've visited lots of times and think the shopping area is fine...parts of the centre of Bristol are unpleasant.

Edited

I have thought about South Glos but not really researched it. Bath is out of my price range as a single person. Don't know Thornbury or Malmesbury - will look them up. Clevedon is nice but quite expensive and no train station and I think not much post 16 education provision.

Cam and Dursley are a lot better.

Figgygal · 29/12/2025 22:37

If you're open to South Glos I'd definitely consider Cam or chipping Sodbury as access to trains from Cam and Yate stations.

I think it’s a shithole …..I’ve only ever visited…wouldn’t go back….run down…tatty…dirty….sad little town ….nothing about it ..no soul …nothing to like at all

With all due respect, Weston is more than the town centre shopping streets. And unless you live somewhere, I really don't think you 'know' somewhere and are not answering what I asked.

Are you sure? I'm surprised by the attraction especially given where you currently live. We have offices in both places you mentioned and I visit both. I like visiting for a day or 2. The depravity, poverty, run down ness in WSM is worse than Bristol, although parts of Bristol are very run down and poverty stricken.

Are you sure other places, outside Bristol, Bath, Glos wouldn't be better?

onwards2025 · 29/12/2025 23:02

As others have said m, it's a very undesirable area and seems an odd choice

Which bits? In what way? Do you live there? I do know a couple who live in Haywood village who love it, and a colleague who lives in Uphill. I must say I am finding these vague replies really frustrating and not really answering what I asked.

A town centre speaks volumes about a place….and Weston town centre screams poverty and depravation….im from the NW ….a little market town ….Blackpool is my nearest town for comparison….and Blackpool wins hands down IMO….at least Blackpool has some soul….your kids will fly the nest early….they will be raring to get away

Peclet · 29/12/2025 23:52

My friend lives there and she hates it for all of the above reasons. You seem disinterested in hearing anything negative.

It has a serious drug problem.

Yate?

StillSittingInACornerIHaunt · 29/12/2025 23:52

Hi op, I'm also in Bristol and visit Weston a few times a year with the kids. I like it, but I do generally like faded English seaside towns! I know a few people who have moved there from Bristol recently, I expect that trend will continue.
Perhaps the people who think you're mad to move to such a 'shithole' think all of Bristol is like Clifton and haven't seen how grim and run down parts of Bristol are now.
I don't know anything of the sixth form provision I'm afraid.
If you're not convinced by Weston maybe look at Portishead too? They're reopening the Portishead to Bristol Trainline in the coming years. Good luck!

dicentra365 · 29/12/2025 23:56

Youre not going to like my answer either, but I’ve lived in that area and found it dull and bleak in winter. No way would I go back. There has got to be somewhere nicer you could live. I think even Burnham is better although probably wouldn’t work for your commute.

TheaBrandt1 · 29/12/2025 23:56

Clevedon is much nicer. Always thought Weston an absolute dump.

PolyVagalNerve · 29/12/2025 23:59

Weston - super - mud
grubby chavvy seaside town -
lots of rehab (detox) centres there - people from over England go there for treatment -

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 29/12/2025 23:59

Your poor daughter ! She will be wanting to move out asap. Stuck in a run down seaside town for her social life.

Moussell · 30/12/2025 00:02

I know people in Worle and have always liked visiting there. Handy for the beach and Bristol. There are buses and trains. There are nice walks around Sand Bay. Was great for our dc to visit. Plenty going on. Yes you see the odd druggie at the seafront but I’ve never felt it different to anywhere else. Worle has a small range of shops which is handy. A lot of housing to choose from.
