Floor plan help - Adding dividing wall

Hi MNetters!

I'm looking at rejigging my downstairs floorplan to meet some needs:

  1. Would like separate hallway with stairs - Downstairs is pretty open plan and so currently stairs in lounge. Considering adding dividing wall to partition off a hallway/stairs and make lounge into a smaller snug. Thoughts?
  2. We have a small utility/bootroom with WC next to it. We'd like an extra shower, so we're wondering whether to steal space from utility/bootroom and add shower to WC making it a more functional bathroom. Kids are growing up now and probably need the shower more than we need the bigger coats/bags space. No option to add extra shower upstairs.

Floorplan attached with proposed lines drawn very shoddily!

Also, for the lounge partition, we're thinking double glazed pocket doors so that we can keep a big middle space open most the time, but have option to close it off when teens have their mates round and we want to relax/not hear their noise! Something like this https://www.directdoors.com/products/lincoln-double-evokit-pocket-door-clear-glass-white-primed?currency=GBP&variant=56244132839808&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=1886afd575d5&srsltid=AfmBOorVy7VT5ppb04VWIML9KXLGpIoj9XWwafSXu4k31lycf-syJOtWZ_M (but not that exact style). The door to porch and door to kitchen are already glazed so there's a nice light-flow.

Hi OP.
totally get what you are saying.
i think separating the lounge to make a hall is going to make a lovely staircase but small lounge. I was going to suggest a porch and then spotted you have one. Can you do more with that to give more “hall”?

I wouldnt do anything with the hall/living room: I’d invest in extending the utility/boots/wc to give you a bigger space that incorporates the shower, boots, etc. this will also take some pressure of your feeling of needing a hall. Hope that makes sense.

Yes - my worry exactly!

However, the floorplan isn't quite true - didn't want to post my entire floorplan as our house is quite unique and identifying - we actually have a another area at the back of the kitchen which is fully open plan (kitchen, family sitting area/tv area, dining) and we tend to do all our 'living' in that bit. The lounge with the stairs would be a snug area really - a small, cosy living space for me and DH to escape to in the evenings and leave the teens in the open plan bit. But, its hard to know how small is too small.... even for a cosy snug!?

Extending boot room not an option as no where to extend to (next doors house is to the side, and extending front ways can't work as we'd lose the driveway)

OK, so look at your bedroom sizes. Are any of them 10x 12ish? If so that's the size of your snug. Can you picture that working. Sit in the bedroom, imagine a sofa, desk or whatever you'd put in the snug.

If you can't bring the utility forward then just use the whole space as a shower/utility room, I really wouldn't be dividing it.
